Who covers for you when you take your Vacation? You need to offer them at least a 1/2 shift once in awhile.

My question is I have a 6 to 2 LPN that the replacement for her did not show up. The DON was already covering a shift in the Locked memory care unit for another call in. she left the keys on the desk and left with no one on that cart.

"What about" the next shift didn't show up the nurse put her keys on the DON Desk and left.

I wear street clothes, I need the pockets. I like colored jackets....

I had a AA in Business administration and an AA in psychology and my RN, I am employed in administration at a behavioral Health hospital. In a job like mine they have a stipulation that states you must acquire a BSN in 5 years. In my case they have waived this requirement due to my life experience.

It's only to late if you don't do it.... I went back to school to come a nurse at 45 . No nursing background just went for it.. graduated at 48. And have been an RN for 10 years....

I returned to nursing at age 45. I struggled until I did some research on learning styles. once I found out that, then I was able to study 1/2 time I was with better results.

Pay attention to the rules. they are there for a reason. If someone yells duck! do it ...lol I have been a Psyc nurse on an acute inpatiant unit for 5 years. Love every Min.

I went back to school at 45. I graduated when I was 48 from the RN Program, I have Doubled my income and have a chance to try different things. I enjoy JOB satisfaction.

I started the LPN program in Aug of 2004. I was 45. My hubby was not happy about me wanting to go to college. He thought it was too much for me to handle. I had signed up and promised I wouldn't go if he said no... I missed the 1st week of school because he couldn't make up his mind, Monday morning I told him that he better tell me if I could go or not and he wouldn't say anything so I took that as a yes and went to college.... I went to my 1st class and it was Nursing 1 the instructor took attendance and afterwards she asked me to pick up my books and step out into the hall she said that I couldn't start a week late that they have already taken a test and I missed the lecture. So I didn't say a word and went to the councilors' office and asked if there ANY of the programs in this college that the student guide didn't applied to. He said no, so I turned right around and went back to the class. Sat down asked if I could have the power point. And she handed it to me. After the lecture she said I would need to take the test tomorrow. I said fine. I took the 1st test and the second test on the same day... I failed the first test because they take 10% off for taking it late. I got an 80% (a C) on the second one. So I just plugged away... continued on. At Midterm my instructor pulled me aside and told me I was at a high D... I asked her if she was kicking me out. She said no because I had perfect attendance. I told her that it's not over until the fat lady sings and this fat lady hasn't sung yet!!! I paid for this and I was going to go to the end even if I failed it... I would just take it over if I had to. I passed with a B!!! I only had one wrong on the final! The second semester I took 3 classes online A&P II, Psycho social & med terminology that helped with the sleep issue. I could do them on my own time. Our school has open enrollment and I took 18- 21 credits a semester I graduated with a 3.5 GPA in three semesters. I continued taking my Co required pre- req. classes so that my work load would be lighter later in the RN program. I worked 5 nights a week as the Charge nurse on the night shift, and 3 day shifts. I was accepted into the part time program. So my RN program was 3 semesters long. I only had the core classes left.... Thank God. Those classes were the hardest classes I have ever had. Organization was one of the keys to my success I bought a large day planner. Everything about school and personal life was in it. I knew when my tests were and when projects were due. If future papers were on the agenda I kept a list of ideas or things I would like to research. I always kept in mind what my future practice would entail. (Geriatrics) It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I had many struggles though it I worked for local nursing home full time. I work 10 shifts per 2 week period. And usually work 1 to 2 - 12 hour shifts if someone called in. I graduated with a 3.12 I didn't get any time off. With school and work it was 12 days straight until my weekend off. I told the "kids" the other students that this is just a short Blip in my life and I will get through it. I graduated in May of 2007. Took the NCLEX the same day my 1st granddaughter was born...(I knew my daughter was in labor but she and my husband did not want me to postpone it) well I took the test and made it back to my daughters side to have my hand in on the delivery. (Another story some day.) I found I had passed the NCLEX the next day. I worked in Geriatrics for 4 ½ years. This January I started at the Local hospital in the In Patient mental Heath Unit. I have enjoyed this immensely. They have asked me to apply for the Clinical Nurse Supervisor but I have decided that I no longer want that responsibility. That's my story.... Yes keep going don't stop... it is so easy to let life get in the way. And you know what... what other people think is unimportant. The rewards are great. I finally have job satisfaction!!

I did the same thing. I worked in LTC, I was hired and working as an LPN and found out they would be having an opening for an RN in about 18months... so I just kept going. I did that job for a year as an RN and then was offered a position in running an Alzheimer's unit. After 3 years I was recruited to the Mental Health unit at the Hospital. I love this job. It is exciting every day.

I never regretted going back to school it was a tough 3 years but I have been employed. Each time i have applied for a job i have had an offer. My current job I was even recruited. That was exciting. So many choices... and oppertunities.

I use the the I&O to track voiding for the care plan. with the new computerized ADL/s it works like a charm.

the Market place already demands it.

I use at work and at home, Most people tell me they don't speak my language...LOL. because of medical terminlology I can dicipher new things. it also helped my with trick questions during nursing school. .... very important.

Start interviewing. I had amazing skills from working in a Nursing home. We did IV's Blood draws Constant assessments. I worked there for 4 years. Aplied to a hospital and was interviewed for 3 different jobs. Clinical nurse leader, Critical care, and Mental health in patient. I chose the mental health inpatient and have been there ever since... I love it.

I love 12 hours shifts.In my 6 week block, I only work 1 Monday. my weekends off are 4 day weekends. and I have a stretch of 6 days off during that block. You can't go wrong with that. I do like to work 3 in a row. It does take me 1 day to recover regardles if I work 1 or 3 days.

My Psychiatrist/MD has told me that I have saved his license on many occasion, because of my Medical back round. I have 5 years as a Care manager for a 68 bed Nursing home ( I did all the rounds with all the Md's). I have been working on the In Patient setting for a year and I love it. I do Groups, Pass meds. (piece of cake compared to LTC) I do Admission, and Discharges when as I work as a Staff nurse. As Charge nurse I assess the phone calls From the ER's from all over the state of MN. to review appropriateness for admission. That involves getting HX and reviewing labs results, then consult with MD. I go to team meeting each morning we meet with 4 of the 10 psychologists, the Psychiatrist, 2 social workers. we review each Pt. It is so different than LTC So much more rewarding. I do not care what the public preception is. I know what I do is life changing for the people I work with. We save lives not Like an ER nurse. We get someone in there darkest hour. and in 3 days to a week they are back home and feeling better. It can be as simple as a Med change to getting the right services for some one.

Our hospital is doing surveys and stressing good customer experiences. My unit has the worst surveys.... I told the Unit manager that most of the patients arrive in handcuffs...(i work in patient mental Health) Itis hard to Pleased them with the service.... LOL

(another story some day.) i found i had passed the nclex the next day. i worked in geriatrics for 4 years the last 2 as a unit manager for a alzheimer's unit. in december i accepted a job in the mental health unit at our local hospital. so far this has been great! a new chapter in my story. that’s my story.... yes keep going don't stop...i do toy with the idea continuing with my education. i was told by a np that is going on for her her doctorate, that my experience in geriatrics is golden making me more marketable in todays market. it is so easy to let life get in the way. and you know what… what other people think is unimportthe rewards are wards are great. i finally have job satisfaction!!

You get that "look" for other areas as well. I managed an Alzheimer's Wing, and got that look. I got that look when I said I would never do OB, Don't concern your self your fellow student nurses don't have the experience for you to be concerned about What look the give you. just keep moving forward. I sugest you take abnormal psych.

The Last 3 administrators always want to get involved with Nursing.... its where the action is. But that is my nest... Don't mess in it....
