Anyone ever gone through nusing school while pregnant?
Ellean, I am going to attempt to answer your post as nicely as possible seeing as I find it highly offensive. I'm not constantly pregnant....I became pregnant ONCE while in nursing school. I am still an good student and am actually even a student rep. for our class. That all being said my children are blessings and NOT a annoyances that get in the way of my "career." Geesh. And I will start my career in August working nights while my little ones sleep. :-) it is very possible to balance both career and family. I am more than sure I am not the only poster on the forum that has been able to do both.

Anyone ever gone through nusing school while pregnant?
It is soooo do-able!! I am in my last semester of nursing school. Right smack dab in the middle I got pregnant with my 5th child. All of my children are young as well 9, 6, 5, 3 and now 1. My husband is VERY traditional so I have kept up with all of my stuff here at home (all of the house work, meals etc.), as well as the school work. If I can do this I know with out a doubt that you can as well. Have faith in the Lord and in yourself and you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. I know it may be scary but you can do this....I promise, it just might take some hard work. Best of luck on everything.

Fibromyalgia
So you truly believe all of the people with this DX are hypochondriacs?
-
Fibromyalgia
I'm not sure I get what you are saying here, you do not believe in ADD/ADHD/ODD? Ever know someone personally that has been DX with any of those? I use to work with children with ADD/ADHD trust me they are real.

Fibromyalgia
Even after reading all of these emails from people who suffer from "fibro", or know someone who suffers from it, you can still claim that they are hypochondriacs? That's a little insensitive, in my humble opinion. There are many illnesses that we now know to be diseases that years ago simply were not recognized by the medical community, let alone the public in general. I would think that depression would be a good example of this.

Say What??????!!!!!!!!!!
Ok this was not from a patient but a question from my sister.... "Jen, if I drink too much water will I drown my baby?" We were both pregnant at the time and I nearly peed my pants from laughing so hard.

Male Nurses Gay!
Sorry darlin'... but Huh? No, men choosing nursing as a profession is not going to "turn them gay". Occupations (I'm gonna say minus those in the sex industry) do not have anything to do with one's sexual orientation. NO occupation is going to change one's sexual orientation. I am going to school to be a nurse because I have a caring nature, I am going to guess that is why most people go into nursing. Also, only one of 20 or 30 guys that I go to school with is openly gay. The others seem to enjoy being out numbered by the women and being surrounded by a bevy of babes. I'm gonna give the benefit of the doubt and hope you were only being curious and that your post just kind of came out the wrong way.

Pregnancy question
not medical advice just friendly advice....ask your ob to do a blood test to check for pregnancy. if you are not pregnant might want to have your ob/gyn get to the bottom of why you haven't had your period.

cpr training for nursing students- HELP!
I got mine from the American Red Cross. You can call your local chapter and ask about CPR for health care professionals or for professional rescuers (I can't remember exactly what they called it). Tell them that you are entering nursing school and they should help. The cost wasn't bad at all, $50 if I remember correctly and that includes the book. Hope this helps Jen A.

Oboy.....I guess this is a good sign.....

Fibromyalgia
Thank you so much for that post!!!!!! LOL! I had to laugh about the SVT I just had a heart ablation to try and correct mine. It is kinda hard to fake it when you are wearing an even monitor that catches it.

Fibromyalgia
Ummm I don't know if I would call those "fashoinable" diagnosis. I have MVP with regurg. and have some trouble with hypoglycemia. I am not diabetic but if I do not eat right my blood sugar crashes and I end up passed out somewhere on the floor or in the ER. This RARELY happenes now that I am an adult (like once in 5 years) but when I was a kid and didn't understand it happened a lot. Responses like yours are what stop people like me from seeking treatment when having a problem. Pls. explain your feelings about MVP. I mean it is dx by an echo. do you not believe that it can cause problems or you just have trouble with the dx in general?? Do you have the same feelings with MVP with regurg.?

Who has kids?
It's been a little tough. I have 4 kids...7, 4, 3, and 19 months. I just finished up my first semester of nursing school. I managed to do really well in school, keep up with my house work and spend time with the kids but ended up really sick in the process. In order to do everything I was doing before and to spend as uch time with the kids as possible I would go to bed at like midnight and get up around 4 inorder to study and take care of some chores in order to be able to "do it all". My advice....don't try to do it all. Just spend time with the kids and school and let the other stuff work itself out. You can do both but it is nice if you have a supportive spouse.

Would you call in because you didn't get any sleep?
Me too. If I don't get enough sleep (at least 5 or 6 hrs) I end up picking up every virus that passes me. Plus, when I am done with school, I would just not comfortable having the lives of others in my hands with a foggy brain. I've gotta say though with 4 small ones (7, 4, 3, 20 months) and nursing school it is tough to get enough sleep. Hopefully when the kids are a bit older and I am done with school I'll be able to get a little more rest.

Dishonest Nurses
Well said!

Dishonest Nurses
Don't feel bad Tazz. Like I said earlier I wish someone had been watching my back when my nurse pushed my phenergen too quickly. It might not seem like a big error to some but then again they are not sitting here with an arm that hurts a month after the fact. An error doesn't have to be life threatening to be life altering or painful at the very least. I wouldn't want the nurse that did that to me to get in trouble but she does need some reteaching. I mean heck like I said aside from pushing the meds. too fast she wiped her runny nose and then put that finger on my arm (after the alcohol prep.) to stabilize my vein. I didn't report her but I did ask the nurse the next day why she was pushing to so slow knowing I'm a nursing student she explained. When I asked if it was something that only she did, she replied "Hospital policy sweetie." Again errors don't have to be big to be harmful. Don't ever feel bad about voicing your opinion btw. That is supposed to be the beauty of a forum like this.

ATI test
We had to take it but not to move forward. Basically my school used it to point out our weaknesses so that we could work on them. Aside form reading our ATI book, I went online and did the practice tests.

L&D in Alabama
I'm not sure about Montgomery but some terrific L&D nurses in Huntsville told me that I could go straight to L&D after getting my License. If I remember correctly they start at 19 or 20 dollars and hour before shift differentials. That was a year and a half ago though so I am not sure how current the salary data is. I plan on working there after I graduate and obtain my license.

*microbiology Summer 07*
I've got 4 little ones as well. Have faith in yourself, you'll do great. I was surprised at how easy the class was really. I got an A and that was with me missing 2 weeks of school with having my gallbladder out. If you need anything don't hesitate to fire me off a message.

*microbiology Summer 07*
Don't sweat it. I took Micro. a couple of years ago in the Summer. It, to me, was an easy class. Not to mention a blast. It was a total eye opener though when we cultured a local Pizza restaurant’s “All you can eat” buffet. Nasty!!! :uhoh21: I loved culturing other things though and watching to see what grew. It was pretty cool. Good luck, I know you’ll do fine though.

Most RN's first borns?
Freaky. I am the first born and both of my fathers (my parents are divorced) had trouble with alcoholism at one time or another in their lives. I've also always been the family caretaker.

Dishonest Nurses
I totally agree that the details do matter. Heck I wish someone would have been watching out for me when a Nurse pushed IV phenegran straight into my IV...she pushed it FAST. This was after putting my IV in without wearing gloves and after wiping her runny nose with the finger she used to stabilize my vein. I got a noscomial infection after a heart ablation and was so sick, I could just smack myself for not saying something to her. I immediately felt intense pain. My Nurse the next day pushed it over 5 mins. She knew that I am a nursing student so she was explaining to me why it is protocol to push it slowly. I ended up with phlebitis and an infection in the IV site. Freaking a month later and it still hurts. I agree we should tend to our own gardens but I also think that patient care should come before anything else. On the bright side....I learned a valuable lesson I will take with me when I am a Nurse. I imagine having to go through this will make me more thorough with my own patients some day.

What do patients say that irks you?
Many MD's are down right condescending when you ask them questions, they get irritated and short and I will admit that I hate to ask some of them anything at all. I guess I have always just felt more comfortable talking to nurses, in my opinion they are just as knowledgeable and most times a whole lot more nice.
