I started in risk management 3 months ago. I deal with clinical issues only. I start my day off by looking for new entries in our occurence reporting system. If there's something urgent to investigate, I'll look at it briefly. If not, I move on to my folder where I place items in order of priority: current investigations, calls to be made, etc. Of course, if there's a sentinel event (SE), everything else gets pushed to the side to deal with the SE. This is, indeed, interesting work. My brain is continuously working!

I've never heard of any facility not using the 24-hour clock. I'm surprised that someone would actually ask for "real person time". I would probably suggest that this person subtract 12 as well.

As I understand, nursing is hiring but internal candidates receive preference. I'd go for it. The worst that can happen is that you might not get called for an interview. Good luck to you!

I think it's time to consult an attorney about workplace violence. It is also time to try to find a safer position, if at all possible. If risk management won't assist, perhaps your area news outlet will?

I'm crossing my fingers. Things are getting interesting now, with all of the Erlanger budget cuts.

I am shocked. The instructor knows (or SHOULD know) what the definitions of assault and battery are in this state. The instructor should know better. You must report this to the Dean of Nursing, asap. Sandnnw is right.

Here are some thoughts, from where I sit. First, let me congratulate you on continuing your education! You won't regret it! Now, what are you offering your current employer that would be mutually beneficial? For example, when I wanted a set schedule at one hospital, I offered to work every Thurs-Sat night (this was before children). By having this schedule, it reduced everyone else's need to work weekend shifts & I had my 3 nights in a row. Management was happy & so was I. If you can't get the kinks in scheduling worked out, have you considered online coursework? Online nursing degrees are available through the board of regents' web site. I'm having to go this way, myself as I like my job but it doesn't work with the hours of grad school. Next, if at all possible, gain a skill that is indispensible to your unit/area. It makes you more valuable to the team. Volunteer to become the unit cpr instructor, if possible. The more you know, the more they want to keep you (usually). Finally, if you find it necessary to look for another job, try to coordinate your start date & orientation with your school breaks. I don't know how long orientation takes but if you only have to deal with it for a week, perhaps changing jobs at Spring Break might work? If not then, perhaps right after the semester ends? Just thoughts. Good luck to you!

I wouldn't count on any positions that aren't essential to patient care being filled at the big two for at least 6 months, if not longer. The economy is kicking everyone.

Wabash, I'm shy. Something about nursing, though, gets me to take the focus off of my feelings & focus on my patients. It's about them & meeting their needs. It gets easier, really. Good luck!

Totally normal. I felt the same way, 14 years ago. The only thing that I think would've helped me would have been if I'd worked as a CNA in the hospital. I would have actually seen some of the things that I didn't encounter until I started working. I would have felt like I had a clue, which would've been nice. We were told that our skills would come in the first year. They did but man, it was hard!

Have you checked with Banner Health? They have a telephone triage program that I think is based in Phoenix. As of last year, they were still in existence. Good luck to you!

Wow! When did that happen? Back on 9 South, it used to be 1:6 on nights & it was increasing to 1:7 if the acuity of the patients was fairly low. This was 10 years ago, of course. Magnet status may have changed things a bit.

Have you checked with any insurance companies?

CNM versus MD? No difference in safety.
