PHCC Fall 2010 applicants? You out there??
Thanks! That totally worked. I got an 88. So, like I said, I had not studied/prepared at all so I'm hoping I can pull my score up at least a couple points. So as of now, 88 TEAS and 3.46 gpa Allison

PHCC Fall 2010 applicants? You out there??
Hi, I am applying. I have a gpa of 3.46. I took the teas a while ago and I can't find my score report but I just called and someone is going to call me and tell me what my score is. I'll post it here when I know. I will probably take the teas again since the first time I tested with literally no preparation. Does anyone know what the hours for the program are? Allison

" Evening students do better on exams then day students" ?
I have gotten this comment in MANY classes at my university and at the cc. some instructors have clearly stated that they believe this is because the average age of evening students is higher and that many are professionals. Additionally that on average they are more mature and have finished with whatever social things (parties, drinking, whatever) might get in the way of the success of of a younger, early class taking student. I have to say, my experiences totally back this up! I seriously prefer later classes because of the student population. I have always been one of the youngest in my evenings classes ( not just nursing, across many disciplines) and I prefer the atmosphere. I don't like gossipy drama queens loudly talking about how they got drunk last night and aren't sure who they slept with (true story) or someone so immature they need to argue with the prof during class time instead of office hours. I just find much less of this in later classes and with older students in general. That being said, I have also gotten the total bull crap "you're so young, you don't have kids, just wait, you'll see how hard it is" stuff that really makes me angry. I do have kids, I worked and went to school both FULL TIME but because I didn't use my kids as an excuse for poor performance like some, it was assumed I did not have these responsibilities. Allison

Cheaters in my med/surg class
I think this is disgusting and this person is probably a cheater and hopefully will never be responsible for care of anyone I know. I am very surprised that so many people share the view that this is not a patient safety issue. There are ALWAYS people who pass licensing exams in nursing, medicine, law, etc that make it by some fluke random answering or something, these people are a danger to society and these cheaters may go on to be these people. I have seen so many posts and heard so many stories about someone who can't believe they/someone else did not pass the NCLEX- people who know their stuff fail and often as people who don't pass- it just happens. That doesn't necessarily mean you should tell anyone. You need something besides claims that they don't study and decent grades. I knew people who said the same thing and went home and did nothing BUT study. Some people just can't admit they were not born knowing everything. I'm sure your really angry and frustrated and well, feeling cheated. If you really feel like you need to talk to someone, maybe start with an advisor. I think it is pretty unlikely that you alienate yourself over this but be tactful. Allison

PTEC
Anyone a current or past student of PTEC LPN program? Any info to share? What amount of "points" did you need to get in? Thanks.

Money
someone said coupons... I think this is a great idea but I have found that most of the time just buying generic stuff saves about the same amount without having to hunt through the paper. I also do not buy books that are not required and in some classes did not buy one when I could do the reading online, I have also shared books with other people or borrowed from people who already took the class. JUST TO REDHEAD: for clarification, my sister and her boyfriend were both laid off and asked if they could move in with us so we found a bigger house to rent and we both save money. you were really unreasonably nasty and mine was not a personal attack but, your was. if your SO works hard and pays your bills, you don't need to be nasty because mine does too. Certainly people who are having a hard time making ends meet aren't all buying $300 purses, etc but a hell of a lot of them are! Just because I point that you doesn't mean you need to get defensive and personally attack my post, that is childish. Did you actually read my post past whatever you chose to be offended by? my life is tough like everyone else's: i have not bought myself new clothes in YEARS, i have a ****** car, the only things I do for fun are FREE, to save money my sister and her bf came to live with me making me the cleaning lady, etc. (but i put up with it to save money) And my mom had undiagnosed lyme disease for 8 years and is really sick so every extra dollar i can find goes to help support her. I had the same tennis shoes for 5 years!!! I recently replased them with $7 shoes on sale at traget because the sole came off when I was running (a FREE form of exercise). I did NOT say I was doing great or that others should be doing better, etc. I said people need to prioritize and they may have to do things they don't want to (like share a house). so yeah, let's be supportive, unlike how you treated me.

Money
I am very frugal , I have an old car that gets 28 mpg and is cheap to insure, I used my tax return to pay tuition, work part time (usually! I can NOT find a job right now with a lot of experience), use my mom and sister as baby sitters (to save money) I share a house with my sister and her boyfriend to cut costs, and I have a fabulous boyfriend who makes decent money as a physicist and covers most of our bills. I have chosen an online LPN program though my grades and NET score would get me into an RN program because most of it is online limiting the need for daycare and both my kids will be in elementary school by the time I am ready to bridge. I buy school books used, buy things on sale and pack the kids and BF lunch from home, we just find ways to cut expenses. I see people complain about not being able to afford this and that and whining that they can't afford school but then these same people have $300 purses, eat out daily and are getting their hair and nails done twice a month. I know my priorities and hyper consumerism disgusts me so it isn't that hard.

Hillsborough Community College Spring 2009
What is the schedule at HCC? I read the in class time is only 6 hours a week and other programs in the area are around 20, just wondering if this is correct. Thanks.

Is LPN/RN bridge ok to apply to MSN programs?
yeah, they are. but thanks, that was a great thought.

Is LPN/RN bridge ok to apply to MSN programs?
Thanks. I feel a little pressured because I have my GEN ED finished and will probably apply to grad programs very shortly after finishing the BSN so there isn't any "re-do" time.

Is LPN/RN bridge ok to apply to MSN programs?
Hello, Is it harder to get into a graduate nursing program with an LPN to RN bridge program than with a straight RN program? I am applying to both an LPN and an RN program right now. I prefer the LPN program because a signifigant portion is online and that really works for me right now. Then I would do a bridge program to finish an RN. I would like to apply at some point in the future to an RN to MSN program at a local school. I am concerned that I go the LPN to RN route it will be harder to get into a graduate program. I have nearly finished a BS in another field so my nursing classes will be the most current when I apply so I want to do whatever will make it easier to get in. I feel that it should be equal as it is for licensing but I never know how universities behave! Thanks a lot!!

CLAST study guide for TEAS?
my point is that this is not some free, seemingly altruistic site to help all the test takers around, there purpose is to sell stuff and they are misleading. Their TEAS math review, for example, is exactly the same as 4 other tests I randomly clicked to compare against so I'm not sure how ANYONE can claim this is a TEAS (specific) review, which is what I asked about! so sure, this is an algebraic review but it is being misrepresented as TEAS specific. The program that requires this test (in my area) does not have information to give beyond that it covers math, science, reading comp. I am extremely frustrated by this. I would like to know what level and type of math as well as what areas of science are covered. Neither of the sites given above provide this information and nothing I have been able to find online do either. I got an A+ in college algebra but didn't bother to buy the book so I don't have one to review and honestly, I took the NET also and that was ridiculously easy compared to college math classes I have taken. I have also taken college chem, bio, a&p, etc and done well. MY POINT IS... I do not want a vague review, I want to clearly understand what I will be tested on to review THAT.

CLAST study guide for TEAS?
Hi, I appreciate you replying but I found this information to be inaccurate. I was aware of these sites before I posted.... The "unofficial study guide..." website is crap...they list the TEAS review questions for MULTIPLE exams and then try to sell you their services. Also, the atittesting site doesn't actually give any information on what is covered beyond the basic description of math, science, reading, etc.

HOLY CRAP @ PHCC
Hi, I understand it's competitive and I am applying to both RN and LPN programs. My frustration is the contradictory information I am given! Is it 3.5 or 3.9 I don't know because apparently they don't either!!!!!! I know it is lower than that for other programs that require more and harder pre req classes. I can probably get in there but the schools are further from me and I would have to commute. Thanks.
-
HOLY CRAP @ PHCC
I just spoke with someone in advising... I was recently told by a different advisor that the last pre req gpa "cut off" for the generic RN program was in the 3.5 range (WITH Cs being retaken) which was verified by what I read here. Today I was told the last 3 admission cycles did not admit below 3.8!!!! so which is accurate? If it's 3.5 I can get in, if it's 3.8 I can't so I want to know if I should spent the 25$ to apply or just take the pre reqs for other programs which I think are slightly lower?!? I am very frustrated, on a number of occasions I have been given incorrect information from advising. Can anyone give any input or can anyone give the gpa they got accepted or declined with? Thanks!

what was your school schedule?
Hi everyone, I was wondering what the typical school schedule for an LPN day program is..... 7-3 M-F, 8-2 M-R, etc? Thanks, Allison

Help! Just found out I'm moving to D.C.!!
Thanks guys, this is a lot of useful information! I'm confused, is it reasonable to espect to live in MD and not have a car? Is that hard to get use to, I love the idea of public transportation but I've always had my own car, and I have kids....does that make it harder? I gotta run, I have tons of questions that I'll type later... Thanks again. Allison

Help! Just found out I'm moving to D.C.!!
Hello, I just found out my boyfriend is likely taking a post doc position at NRL in DC and I have no idea what to do! I was going to start a nursing program in Tampa, Florida but obvioulsy the plan has changed. I did some searches for RN programs in the DC area but I have no way of knowing which locations are reasonable due to commute, distance, etc. Please tell me what is reasonable, I also need to check ASAP to make sure I have the pre reqs for whichever program I will be applying to there. I already have an AA from college here and could go into a 4 year program if that's all that is available but I would actually prefer to go into a CC ADN program because it's more likely that I have the pre reqs completed already and they seem to be a semester or two shorter on average here and his position is for 2 years only, I'd like to finish as close to that time as possible. So, in short and despite my rambling, please give me somei nsight on DC programs and if you have any advise, where I owuld and would not like to live with with my young children and can still commute around DC easily for both of us. Thanks sooo much! Allison

It's long, dangerous, but worth typing, to me!
I just have to agree with the quote below. I work for social security and I have SEEN EVERY SELF INFLICTED ISSUE THERE IS and I don't agree with OP although I absolutely understand the frustration. to give just a couple examples.... I see morbidly, rediculously obese people everyday at work saying they can't work because they are so fat, some cry and tell me they can't help it, some laugh and think it's funny I can't get a bp because of the REDICULOUS size of their arm. I had one dude who tried to kill himself and whiney the whole time about he wish he had been successful (in front of his family!), of course he is now somewhat brain damamged and can't work so he needs SSI for himself, wife and children. I see HIV and Hep patients who have completely turned their life around and some that are complete pieces of crap. but you know what, i treat them all with the humanity and understanding i think anyone deserves until they cross a line with me and then i make it clear the attitude stops or so does the pleasantness. Your meth addict wont stop crying while you tend to the cancer patient? Tell her you have patients more urgently in need of your care but you understand her situation and will be there as soon as possible. well, i am certianly glad when I have had issues related to "choice" i had someone understanding and I'm OUTRAGED that when my best friend went to the ER with what she didnt know was a herpes outbreak her fiance had slept around and given her, the nurse thought she had a right or reason to make some comment about how sleeping around and getting STDs is a "choice." sexual assault nurse examiner
I work as a crisis counselor at a crisis center where we have a "nurse examiner" program. All the sexual assaults in the area that don't need to go to the hospital come to our facility where they meet with a counselor and are given an exan by an NP with forensic training. If the victim has to go the hospital, the nurse and counselor go to the hospital to see/examine the victim. Allison
