Hi all! I need some help! I received my RN license last January(2010) and have been working for a home health agency since then, but the problem is that I would like to get into the hospital and they tell me that I need a year of hospital experience, huh? How does this make sense? How can I get the experience if no one will provide me with it. I really love nursing, I eventually would like to become a NP in women's care, OB/GYN but I know before I even get to the graduate schooling part of it I need to get some experience in those fields L&D, ante, post, mom and baby. Can someone let me know their experiences about getting employment. I am located in Tampa, FL, yes I know there are thousands of jobs out there, but they all seem to want a year of acute care hospital experience! HELP HELP HELP!!!!!

Nope, No Luck! I have a similar story and I have been trying to get int the hospital and can't. I have been working as a Home health nurse (because that was the only job I could get) for a yr and still no luck in getting a hospital job. I have been trying since I received my license in Jan of 2010 and have no luck at all. I graduated in 2007 but did not get my license til 2010 so i am in the same boat. I would like to eventually become NP in women's care, but I have to work as an RN in women's first so I am right there with you. I wish you the best of luck! Toya

It's not everyday us nurses come across great opportunities. I've had my license since January and I have been having a hard time getting into any hospital let alone two job offers. I currently work as a Home health RN and I have been capped in pay since the 3rd week of me being there because of "Medicaid". So forgive me if I sound bitter, but I think you should stay at least a year and maybe they will start to have more job opportunities for us new RNs. Just my opinion.

So yea no I am not where I want to be. I got my RN license Jan 2010, currently working for a home health agency, no benefits, PRN. It pays some of the bills, but I really want to be working in a hospital on a L&D unit. Right now any position in the hospital would be great. The agency I work for is only for children so I would love to work on a peds floor or mother baby, but L&D is my dream job, hope to one day be a NP for women's care so I guess applying for 1000s of jobs hasn't worked for me yet, but I hope those endless internet job search hours will pay off soon!

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I would definately take any hospital job right now! I guess it just isn't my turn yet, hopefully I get a turn soon though. I need the experience as I mentioned I am working for home health and hospitals don't really recognize that has experience so we will see. Thanks again Latoya

Hi all just wondering if there is any news on any new RN positions at Florida Hospital or Orlando Health. I have looked at both websites and have yet to see anything. I have been working as a RN here in Tampa, FL but its home health. I have been an RN since January so still pretty new, want to get into a hospital, but haven't had any luck. Hi All, I am a new RN who really wants to become a L&D nurse, eventually a NP for Women's care. I am having a problem with getting a hospital job let alone into L&D. Are there any suggestions how I go about doing this? I will do whatever it takes. Hi Daisykip, I passed the Nclex and I was only making around the 60-70% range, the key is read the rationale for the right and wrong answers so you can understand why are you answering the way you are. That's what helped me, Good Luck hope you pass!

Hi All, if you don't mind me asking where did you guys relocate to? I too am a "New RN" not so much new grad because I graduated in 2007 but I just got my license in Jan. I landed a home health position here in Tampa, FL but I haven't been able to get in at a hospital yet and was wondering if i should try or how do i go about relocating. I love home health but i need some hospital experience and I need some health insurance too. Thanks! I studied about 3 months, because I didn't want to over study so I didn't start studying hard until i got my att, which was in october so I had until Jan 21 to take the test and I didn't schedule the test til Jan 20! I used Saunders 4th ed to study from. The CD it comes with gives you a test and then a 6 week study schedule to get you prepared. What I found was that I knew most of the material, but it was the way you go about answering the questions. You have to read the rationales so you know why you are getting the answers right and wrong--to see what your thought process is. Let me just say know your priority questions and infection control! Yes you are so right! We have to network with as many people as we can, sometimes it is not what you know but who you know that will get you the position you so desire. I hope all of those who are looking finds something real soon! Latoya

I am in Tampa, FL and I have applied to all the hospitals here and nothing, they all want a year experience unless you go into there internships, however they are only offered maybe twice a year so very competitive and so that means not until May will I have a chance at that. I know guys this is a hard pill to swallow! I just got my RN license in January and I have been going through the same things. I finally got a position at PSA Healthcare which is home health, I think it is cool but you know you want to have that hospital experience. Most jobs here in tampa, fl want us to have at least a year experience and it sucks pretty bad! I was not an LPN so I don't even have that experience but hopefully it gets better soon! Hi all, just was wondering what other schools did you look into before going with Chamberlain. I am a RN and have my ASN and eventually want to get my NP, but one step at a time LOL! I have been talking with the admissions director for the last couple of days and I sent her my unofficial transcripts and turns out it might take less than a year for me to get my BSN, I see that you guys seem to like it just wanted to find out more you know, have to way our options! Don't get discouraged! I don't know if you are a spiritual person or not but I can tell you what helped me pass my 3rd time was the fact that I decided that it was no longer me in control of my situation. With that being said we all say we believe in a higher power but how often do we really rely on that. So what i did was i got closer and closer to GOD by reading the Bible and praying and praying and praying. And if you don't already know it prayer changes things. I tell you it was only by the grace of GOD that I passed this test because I felt just like you. My spirits were down but I got through it because of Him! I now let him lead my every move because He is the one in control. God does things in our lives to make us understand that it is not about ourselves and that we have to become humble as little children and until we do this we will always have troubles in our way. The Bible says in Philippians Chapter 4 verse 13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Hold to that! Pray and keep going. Believe and Trust GOD! Let Him be your guide. Just have faith and I am sure that he will give you what your heart truly desires! Hang in there and I will keep you in my prayers!

I would have to say that this is a pretty good score. I scored around the 72-75 area and I passed the nclex last week. So you got a pretty good chance! Just make sure you know prioritization and infection control because I got a lot of those questions. Good Luck you can do it!

Wow this seems surreal you know! You here while in nursing school that there is such a nursing shortage but to find out that they can still pick and choose what kind of nurses they want. It is pretty funny and sometimes depressing, but i read another post and it said maybe while we wait for a position we should further our education. That now seems to be a very good idea. lol

I feel your pain! I just got my RN license this month and have been trying to get a job too! I called around the hospitals and was told that the new RN internships have already started in jan so the next one is not until may. I am like man i hope i don't have to wait til then. I have been looking online and some RN positions say experience preferred not required and those have been the ones i have been applying to. So try Brandon hospital. I also spoke to someone at TGH and they are suppose to be having a critical care internship that starts next month if the budget is ok so i was told to check there website everyday. When did you apply? I am a new RN looking for work but all the hospitals seemed to have hired all the new RNs already I guess I am a little late. They are telling me that the new internships don't start til May. Let me know what info you have please! I thought the Nclex was the hard part lol. I just passed the Nclex-RN on 1/20/10 so I am kind of anxious about getting a job period. Let me know what info you have again thanks!

yea at this point you should be ready. one thing i know you shouldn't second guess yourself. They say don't read to much into the question take it at face value! I just passed last week and I got lots of questions regarding priority and delegation and infection control. So be sure to look over those. Don't do any real studying though because you don't want to over do it. Just stay calm and relax i am sure you will pass since you have studied and you feel pretty good right now about it! HI I just took my test last week wednesday and passed! I used Saunders mostly and I passed with 75 questions. I am not too sure on how Kaplan testing questions work but I do know that my test had a lot of priority and infection control like questions so be sure to brush up on that. when i say infection control I mean they will ask you something like if you have a type of infectious patient what precautions would you use. So definately be prepared for those and you can not wear hats or big coats in the testing center. you can take candy but you will have to put it in the locker that they provide for you when you check in. You pretty much can not bring anything in there. They check your pockets so i wouldn't put anything in them. Good Luck try to relax and stay calm if you find yourself getting antcy during the test stop for a minute and take a break if you need to I got through 75 questions in like a hour an a half so regardless of the fact that there can be 75-265 questions with 6 hours you have plenty of time just stay steady and do it! You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
