  1. Argo....you know thats not the norm. Most units are staffed with females....because most nurses are females. I always made it a point to get along with everyone, but I don't eat lunch. Had a few I hung out with outside of work....and that was trouble. Never again. Be friendly....nice....but be careful.
  2. Work with more than one preceptor....everyone runs their day differently. Be confident! ( I know you are!) And if you hate med/surg....there are other options!
  3. I didn't mean to be rude....but i thought it was almost comical. Maybe you can help take care of Mom!
  4. NEWS FLASH!!! RN's get to deal with all that fun stuff too!
  5. Do you realize what a live in nurse would cost? No....medicaid will not cover that.
  6. I did the online version through the AHA. I need to get the skills portion tested. It was cancelled twice. I need to find another place to check my skills...ugh!!!
  7. Never place a chicken wing under your breasts....and when a nurse finds it there....never say "I wondered where that went..." as you gobble it down.
  8. As a RN, if I had to do it over agian, I would choose sonography or xray tech. I love being a RN, but it is stressful. There are many options for sonography. From OB to cardiac....you can specialize. I wish you luck in whatever you decide!
  9. I am not sure what type of contracting you are thinking about, but I am an independent contractor. I am contracted through a company to do in home training visits. The company calls to see if I am avaliable, i accept or decline, I make the appointment and turn in documentation, they pay me. I do this on the side of my regular job. It pays well and only takes a few hours.
  10. IMO, I would continue to apply for positions that intrest you in your state and others. I would not seek licensure in any other state until at least you have had an interview. I recently moved from one state to another and did not get my new states license until I had a position lined up. As long as you have a temporary license on day one of work, you should be ok. It took about 2 weeks to get my temporary license and my regular license followed in another 6 or so weeks. I think I paid a $10 fee for the temporary license.
  11. You only have to take the NCLEX once. You can take it in any state. I went to school in Ohio, lived in Michigan, took my NCLEX in Michigan and received my first state licensure in Ohio because that is where I applied for licensure. To obtain licensure in another state, you must endorse to that state. Look at the state board of nursing website for specific instructions for that state. They vary...all will incur a fee, some use NURSYS for endorsement, some require a passport photo, all will check your background... The good news...is that you don't ever have to retake the NCLEX!!!
  12. Has anyone ever bought the Sanita shoes? I love my Danskos....and want a new pair exactly like the ones I have, not with the soles made by another company. I was wondering if anyone has boughtthe Sanita brand and how they compare to the original Danskos?
  13. I am in a situation and I am afraid that I may not be able to give a 2 week proper notice. I need to move out of state as soon as possible. Should I attempt to stay in a hotel for 2 weeks so I can give notice? Do you think that a future employeer will hold this against me? Should I try to explain the situation to my current manager with the hopes that she will understand and let me resign without notice? I am confused here. It is not an option to stay where I am at...and I have no friends and family here.
  14. I am a RN and I currently work for a group of cardiologists. Requirements for this position were 3 years of experience in cardiac nursing preferably in a hospital. My primary function in my practice is to manage the patients on anticoagulation therapy. I also assist with cardiac testing, triage and office visits. It is definitly a different world than the hospital...but still has it's stresses. I miss working 3 12 hour shifts....but I really enjoy being involved in the long term care of the patient. So while opportunities may be limited for an RN in the office enviroment....they are out there. We also have an RN who's primary role is triage.
  15. I have to agree, for myself. Should I ever be diagnosed with a terminal situation, I will meet death on my own terms. It is unfortuante at this time that there is not legal assistance avaiable.
  16. This is dependent on the unit you work on. All RN's are required to have BLS. Some are required to have ACLS. To work on a telemetry unit, you must take a class and or pass a test on rhythms. To work in critical care, some hospitals require a critical care class along with an oreintation period. Many hospitals require a nursing drug calculation test to ensure that medications are given safely.
  17. Many physicians or physician groups still hire RNs. I currently work for a group of cardiologists. They employ 6 RNs at this point and we are growing. We also have 6 medical assistants. We have 2 triage RNs, a case manager RN, a EP RN, a office RN, and a testing RN. I do testing and run the coagclinic.
  18. Could they have been programmed to run at a slow rate concurrently, not the K+ as a piggyback. From what I understand...your d5ns with K+ was on the pump, you then piggybacked the K+ on the same pump. Piggybacked, this would have stoped the ivf, piggyback would infuse, then pump would revert back to ivf. If the pump was set to concurrent, both would infuse at the same time.
  19. I have always used the report sheets given by the hospital I worked in, then adjusted them to my own needs. I am out of the hospital setting now, but I will look around for a blank one. Pm me if you are intrested.
  20. Decreased cardiac output
  21. I'm up for this. I agree with the above...might as well add blood cx, ekg, possibly start fluids, what are lung sounds like?
  22. Nursing was also a second career for me. I had my second child in my first semester of clinicals and my third child in my last semester of clinicals. Please keep in mind that there are specific rules about clinicals, and if you are or not allowed to miss any. My school allowed one miss that had to be made up. Your Dr. will probably have to fill out a pregnancy release form of some type, supplied by the school. My only restriction for both pregnancy's was to not take care of a patient with cytomegalovirus, as it could be harmful to the fetus. Good luck in whatever you decide.
  23. I took the ecco class, required upon hire. My former employer wanted to require it, but they wouldn't pay for it.
  24. so, what system did you decide to work for? I am in Mi too.
  25. It's busy, very busy. It also varies with the shift you work. Some times are worse than others.
