Chemeketa 2018
Hello everyone I hope you are enjoying the program. I’m considering applying but I was wondering how long you are on campus. Is it M-F 8-3 like most programs? I don’t know if I could make it work and I’m trying to see how much my son would need to be in daycare.

Concordia University - Portland ABSN Program
Have you started class yet? I’m currently taking classes and preparing to go to Concordia. The cost worries me but I like that a portion of it is online.

Concordia ABSN
Can you DM me the schedule as well if you find it. That is really helpful. My dream is to work in the NICU so while it is super understandable hospitals don’t really want student nurses dealing with neonates it makes me sad :(

Concordia ABSN
Bump. Also considering Concordia because the hybrid program is beetter for me as a mom. Don’t mind the religious aspect since I am Christian. I do care about clinicals... is the peds rotation at a hospital or still in a daycare?

I Need Help Picking My Classes!
Wow your school has pharm as a pre req? That’s interesting all the programs out here have you take pharm in the program. I agree with everyone else. Split up pharm and micro.

Straight A students..
Wow you did great!! I just read an article a few days ago that discussed sleep. I’m trying to prioritize it more. The article said most moms don’t remember their child’s first year and it’s because of sleep deprivation. Something about your brain storing memories during sleep? It said they had 2 different groups they showed a series of flash cards to. One group took a nap after and the other didn’t. The group that took a nap memorized the cards much better! Also I will re read and re listen to lectures over and over trying to get information to stick. I think that is a good idea to be more “active” in my learning. It is very time consuming to re listen to lectures and to keep reading the same text over and over. I’d rather spend the free time I have to study much more effectively. I think this is all excellent study advice thank you for sharing I will be applying all 3!!

A lot of student nurses keep telling me that strong A&P can make patho easier. So I’m definitely trying to take A&P solo and pull A’s in those classes. I will definitely take my sciences alone! Thank you.

Thank you for your input! My school is requiring organic chem as a pre req I’m scared !! But I think it will help later on maybe with A&P? I want to make the best grades I can but I agree it isn’t the end of the world. You still did really well and if I could get all A’s and 2 B’s I would be very happy!

I’m taking your advice!! I’m working on my math courses now and I will do chem after I build my skills up. Then the rest of my sciences! You sound like a great mom and I know you will be a great nurse too.

Nurse dies after assault at job. She finished her shift first.
It’s a sad day when a security guard gets fired for restraining a violent patient. What are they there for? To just “look” like they will do something when they actually aren’t allowed to do anything. Crazy. I hope that guy found a better job.

Linfield Spring 2019
Thank you! Since you have clinical 2 days are they 8 hours long? Making 4 days work seems easier than 5. My husband would arrange his days off to be during the week when I have class and I guess I will have to figure out daycare or a babysitter for the other 2.

Linfield Spring 2019
Wow thanks for all the info. I wasn’t going to volunteer but now I will when I’m done with my pre reqs. It’s really hard carving out time right now just to do one science class a term. So once I’m done with my sciences I will try and replace that with volunteer hours. The clinical sounds great 1, 12 hour or 2, 8s. Is that for Linfield or PCC? I like that there is some flexibility. I have no family in state to watch my son so it makes things harder but by nursing school we will probably utilize a daycare or a baby sitter. The cc’s are so affordable but very competitive. It seems harder to get into a CC nursing program out here then an Ivy League. Congrats on that!

Interested to see how you guys are liking the program? Also what is the schedule like? Any classes online? I’m a mom and really considering Linfield when I’m done with my pre reqs. Thanks.

Giving up PA school acceptance to pursue ASN?
Ok I’m not a nurse yet just working on my pre reqs for school now and I want to give you some perspective from a moms point of view. If you want to be a mom now go for it! Especially if you still don’t really know what you want to do. I waited til I was 30 to have my baby cause I didn’t know what I wanted to do. He is amazing and I wish I would have had him earlier. I turned 31 right after he was born. Now I’m scrambling for school cause I also want a second baby and I feel like time is not on my side. I don’t want them to have a huge age gap. The light at the end of the tunnel is we have been able to live off of my husbands income without accumulating debt. School is going to be harder with a child. Especially if you and your husband have no help. I’m taking my pre reqs now part time but I can’t work. Not even part time cause I am the main care provider for our baby and I need to get As or I won’t be accepted into a nursing program in my area. We have no family in the area. So I would look at your situation and see what you guys really want and can pull off. I’ve been home with my baby for 5 months and I do not regret it. What I do regret was not working 2 jobs before and during pregnancy to save up as much as I could before having him. I feel like nursing school will always be there.

Thank you! I just talked to my financial aid office and they told me I won't qualify unless I take at least 6 credits every term. Some of the science courses are 5. Sigh. It looks like taking my science classes without any other classes will not be an option unless I have the cash to pay for them upfront. That's good you did so well and enjoyed the classes! I feel like a&p will be really interesting but I'm terrified since I heard how hard it is and I have been out of school for so long. I need a really high grade to make it into a nursing program. Lots of pressure. Thank you for the well wishes! I feel like I'm going to be living on a prayer for the rest of the time I'm in school lol

CNA to RN
I noticed a lot of new grads feel overwhelmed in med surg. This seems to also be where most new grads get hired on first and have high patient loads. Do you think being a CNA would help in this situation? The school I’m applying to has a lot of clinical time but it’s mostly all in med surg it seems to me that everyone also hates working in that area. I’m planning on working as a CNA as I knock off my pre reqs and was wondering if this would give me a leg up once I get on a busy floor.

Advice For First Term
Thank you for posting this and good luck!

Thank you! I will look into the notability app I have an IPad too. I was thinking about buying a little recorder to record all the lectures. Some people said that really helped. But if my iPad will do a good job of it maybe I don’t need to do that. I bet your notes look beautiful! I like the idea of writing them out a few times and making a final set. I have been out of school for awhile now so I definitely don’t want to rush through it. I get nervous when I see how many times people have to repeat the sciences in order to get a good enough grade to be accepted for the program. I’d rather add that extra year in now instead of having so many classes to repeat because my GPA isn’t competitive enough. My kid is probably gonna be 8 by the time I graduate but it’s ok lol

Thank you for all this! You sound like a really good student. I actually own a whiteboard so I will definitely use it. Thank you for the resources I’m going to subscribe to Armando and the crash course on YouTube. I also like the idea of looking over the notes everyday. I think going over everything at least a little bit every day will definitely help out. Best of luck to you in your classes!

Did you take statistics and if so did you find that course hard? You think I could get away with taking it with my English course or a humanities elective? Did you find microbiology harder than your A&P classes or easier? Just wondering if I should take microbiology with a psych class or take that one solo too. Im thinking about taking all 3 A&P and chem courses alone. This adds 1 year to my pre reqs. That way I have no other subjects to distract me and I could focus on getting a good grade. I can work longer giving me more healthcare experience points and have more money saved. I don’t plan on working in nursing school. also so Chem seems to be the hardest? I will definitely take that alone without any other classes. Thanks again for your input!

Childcare while in school
I’m kind of in your same position but only have one child (hoping to have 2 by the time I start nursing school) and I’m barely starting my pre reqs this summer. I feel like you might be able to find a sitter that wants to work just a few hours a week. Maybe a trustworthy high school senior , college kid or a stay at home mom who needs extra cash? You have a few older kids that should be fine doing homework and helping with the younger ones. They can also report back to you if the sitter isn’t trustworthy. My son should be 3 or 4 by the time I get into a program and the school I’m applying to is a community college and has childcare there. The hours are from 7am-6pm. That’s how we’re doing it. I’m saving up for the cost now while I’m doing my pre reqs.

How did you get A’s in your science classes? Im very good with english, psychology, history, etc. Math and science have never been my strong suit even though I do find science interesting. I feel like with a lot of studying and hard work I can pull off an A in college algebra so that’s the only one I’m not too worried about. The pre reqs I’m scared of are molecular/cell biology, A&P, chem, and microbiology. so pretty much all the science classes. I’m also scared of statistics. My current situation is... I have a 4 month old baby. I am not working right now but looking to work part time by fall semester. My husband and I will be sharing care-taking responsibility of our son but I see him still being in majority of my care even with going to school and working part time. We have no family in state to help us. In order to have all my pre reqs done to apply for a fall 2021 program I need to take atleast 2 classes every term (with 3 “easy” classes 2 terms) We have a quarter system in my city. I read online and a girl suggested taking A&P alone. I’m not opposed to that but that would push me to apply Fall 2022. Our schools are extremely competitive (aren’t they all) and give extra points for being certified as CNA and having work experience which is what I plan to do part time. so straight A students what are your study tips? What do you recommend? Should I take all A&P courses solo? I have a sequence of 3 that are 4 credits each.

Is this nursing?
I like your perspective. I’m Christian and I want to do something for a job where I give back. I want meaningful work. That’s part of what draws me to nursing over computer science. I feel like nursing is a very “human” job. It seems tough and you probably have to deal with so much BS but I appreciate the nurses that took care of me when I was in the hospital and had my son. Out here our baby stays in the room with us the entire time. The nurses watched my son about 4 or 5 times so I could get some rest. I appreciated this so much cause it’s only my husband and I. We have no family out here. They probably did that because I was nice to them and never called them to my room for anything cause I know they are busy. It breaks my heart that some people lack common civility and treat you guys like crap. Nurses are awesome.
