Carson Newman Spring 2020
Hey! I am in the first semester right now and it is great. Very challenging but doable. We have classes like basically every day (weekends off). Due to the COVID-19 clinical's and all classes are all online but you guys hopefully will get to do clinical's at Jefferson Park Nursing Home in Dandridge. We only did one rotation but it was such a great experience. Brush up on math skills, you will need to pass a medical dosage exam (it's not hard but if math is not your cup of tea like me then start prepping ahead of time). Instructors here are really the best, they care for you and are your biggest cheerleaders. They want to HELP. Do yourself a favor and start watching videos on how to test take in nursing school. IT IS DIFFERENT MONSTER coming from doing pre-reqs. Not to scare you, it's just a new transition. Simple nursing, Level up RN, Registered Nurse.com are excellent resources I use. Get black non-porous shoes ahead of time to break them in and compression socks, you will be on your feet for long periods of times during clinical. Get a penlight you will need that for health assessment (amazon have the best bargains). SAVE your MONEY nursing books are expensive and yes you will need some of the books but NOT all. Msg me and I can give you more info on that. Make a good group of friends that can help you all to be accountable for things. It's fast paced so ensure you get a good planner to plan all the exams and assignments. School is nice small campus, Jefferson city is a nice small old town. Not much to do but since your in nursing you'll always be studying LOL. but Knoxville is about 40 mins away, and morristown is maybe like 20 mins away if you want to explore and eat good place. Last of all, stay motivated. Ensure you get enough rest, time for self and family and eating well. Trust me easier said than done. But I notice a lot people (including myself) struggled at times from not following those basics. Ensure you set aside time to study everyday but that is why I say take care of yourself first because trying to study when you feel like junk, will not help. I hope this helps and again msg me if anything! I look forward to meeting you on campus in fall!

How to handle missing classes for a learning challenged nursing student?
Have him get with his professors ASAP. Print the syllabus out and literally recite that thing. Ensure he knows what is expected from the class and what he expected to know for the classes he is missing. Also, if he has a good cohort he can ask a friend to record the lecture (please ask for permission first). Having a good planner also makes a big difference so as he is gone from a class he knows what he has to get done. I have used this planner and it has made such a big difference in my daily busy routine. Organization I found in nursing school is one of the most overlooked concepts that people don't realize it is very critical. Either plan to fail or fail to plan. Best of luck to your son in nursing school! https://www.leveluprn.com/pages/study-planner

Health Assessment Help
I forgot to also mention that I use picnomic and simple nursing to help retain and understand the information. It really breaks it down to simple terms.

Health Assessment Help
I am in the same position as you. My health assessment instructor is great and at least kind of covers what to read and know. For sure know the nursing process, patient safety and etc. I'm sure that are some of the basics you guys went over.

Thinking about starting pre-reqs this month.
Try taking classes through American Public University or University of Phoenix. They are good and transfer but always do your research and make sure you check that they transfer to the school you want to apply for. Portage learning is another good one that lets you work at your own pace. Get into a good study habit and try to work on TEAS or HESI practice test. This will only benefit you. Some programs require this test before getting into the program. You can have a solid GPA and TEAS but if your scores aren’t to the standard then you may not have a chance. I’m working on bringing up my TEAS score as well. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.

Is this for Me?
It is never to late! When I worked as a CNA there were some new GRAD RN'S that were around there mid 40's. Having another degree is great and you have that diversity and knowledge you can probably share within the hospital/clinic or wherever you go from there. Take the courses you need and apply for nursing programs and in the mean time volunteer or get your CNA license. That will help.

Maybe Clinicals instructor doesn't like men
I say try to talk to her and see if things can work out. Bring in someone else so there is an witness for eyes/ear of evidence in case SHE goes back on her word or whatsoever. If that does not work, speak to your other program instructors/faculty personnel and see what they say and how they can fix this situation.

Do I even have a chance
I say retake it again. I know exactly how you feel. I did amazing in my pre-reqs and overall GPA is pretty high. However I got a 58.7% on my teas. I plan to retake it, I need a 70% or better. Don't let this discourage you in any way, shape or form.

Does the National Guard or Reserves (for any branch) take Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners?
national guard goes by state, and it VARIES on what openings they have. For my state, they have no openings for nurses to begin with. Your best bet is to go reserves and give it a shot. Reserves is federal government and they have a lot more openings. You can try contact a NG state OSM or reserves you would contact a career counselor/AMEDD recruiter. Sorry not not too much help but I figure pitch in the knowledge I know from being a guardsmen.

Joining AD after college as a 66T/ER nurse???
Was there no college rotc at your school? You can join as a DC (direct commission) and go AD or USAR. But for a 66T you would need to have couple years of ER experience. If anything you’ll start off like the rest of us a 66H (med surg nurse).

Patho online
Thank you so much for this! I think I’m going to look into this. UOP (university of phoenix) has a course too and it’s somewhat similar. Weighing out the options. Better over prepared then underprepared right?

Patho online
I’m basically done with my nursing pre-reqs and finishing some general ed requirements. Have anyone took patho online? Is there any online patho class available? I will have to take it in the nursing program but I want to have a taste of patho before starting the program. i did well on my pre-reqs and have CNA experience. Just want to stay up to date and be fully prepared for nursing school.

Liberty University
I wish I saw this earlier! Yes it’s a bummer they changed the requirements again. Now they require the HESI-A2 and the patho. Everything else I have done and complete. I was going to take the summer accelerated. How much students do they usually take in?
