So I have been a clinical educator. Here is my take. She needs to ask to see you in private or ask when you can speak by phone about education related matters. That being said, she may be accountable for tracking things like BLS. When JC or the DOH comes calling or when there is a sentinel event or worst of all when lawyers come calling related to a bad outcome... it is vital that BLS, ACLS, and licenses are up to date. Certain other mandatory/ specialty certifications may also be required. She may not be your manager BUT you are still accountable to keep credentials up to date. It is better for all... including you in the event of an untoward situation. In one hospital, I worked with a group of nurses who could be quite challenging. To be fair, some were wonderfully professional and conscientious. Others repeatedly did things like... not show up for skills days, equipment in services, and optional education. We had a speaker come from 80 miles away for an advanced assessment course and 4 people showed for a course when 10 were signed up. Blowing Off these things wastes time and costs money. If it is something mandatory, it must be made up. If it is not renewing CPR or a nursing license, the person can’t work and a replacement must be found. Yes. She is not appropriate to approach you during patient care. Realize, however, that if you do what you are supposed to she will leave you alone.

That is so cool. I had many mentors who were diploma grads from the 60's. They were awesome nurses. I graduated in 1987 from a community college. I worked at a Catholic hospital, so I know you got a strict but excellent education.

Since it is tick season...How about some education? It is within their scope of practice. What would a school nurse do? Not leave it on the kiddo!!!!!! Let them know what they are looking for and how to instruct the patient. It doesn't have to be you that does it, but it could be.

Seriously. Go study for the NCLEX! It doesn't matter. As a current instructor at a community college and former clinical instructor at two four year schools, I am sure that there is a distinct possibility that your perception of your own ability may not match your professors assessmentsof you. One clinical group of mine included a person who hung out in the nursery studying for another class and a person who was always late and complained loudly that I should get her some time in the NICU even though it was not part of the rotation at our clinical site. So although like these students, you may rate yourself outstanding for every aspect of care.. your instructors may disagree.

After Charles Cullen who killed a number of Patients in PA as well as NJ, the background checks and criminal record review became much more comprehensive in PA. Hospitals in the Lehigh Valley knew he was a wacko,but passed off and didn't tell one another or the BON about him. The SOB was an animal abuser and wife beater. Just a depraved monster!

Some places desperate for nurses offer a sign on bonus. It could help you with debt once you are done. If you do it, study hard so you finish on time! Good luck. ������

What about an infusion center? It is bedside care but not so draining. My friend works in an Urgent care center and works 10s and 12s. They do hire new RNs

This is my first semester lecturing for students. It has been tough in some respects. I have one or two students who are doing ok, but not as well as in other courses. One is completely irrate over an exam. Yet I had students who failed last exam pass with great scores on this exam. The irrate student complains about the exam grade in my presence but not to me. This person is 40-45 years old, not a very young student. I do not entertain that kind of behavior. If this person called me I would have met with her. What experiences do others have with students who are being unreasonable?

The real issue is did the nurse treat this man and his family well? If so, while it may not be "nice" to talk about a patient like this, it is not the end of the world. A lot of people are difficult to care for. Sometimes a nurse just gets a bit over it all. It is prudent not to do this where family or admin will hear, but people do vent. If you don't like it when you are a nurse, don't do it and don't listen to it. Understand that a nurse caring for many demanding patients gets a little spent. Best of luck with your studies!

My dad left over 1 million in assests. Promised my mother who was in hospice she would live out her life at home. He is now gone. She is alive 4 years later and burning through 2k per week for senior care. That includes ME watching her ( unpaid) 50 hours a week and buying her food and diapers. Living long with dementia will eat your assests. Sad but true. Yes. I have consulted lawyers and accountants. When I die, I will likely have my house and a very basic existence. I wish I had done things differently, but at 53 with working and caring for my mother, I have limited earning potential. At least I don't have huge student loans like my kids.

Could you offer the treatment only on certain days and pay the person more $ per hour as a part timer. Say $35/hr to work 25 hours per week? What does the BON in your state say about who can do the treatments?

An older lady being taught to self cath after a bladder repair had to call her sister on the phone because..."She won't believe it when I tell her there are 3 holes down there!"

What about getting a job at a wound care company? They have people who do all kinds of jobs. As far as the BSN...what about the WGU program? If you could focus and finish quickly you may be able to get the BSN and have that extra advantage. You deserve to be happy.

Agency or traveler jobs would probably hire you if you are doing bedside care.
