Feb 22, 201412 yr A co-worker nurse has bragged to me 3 times now that our agency has missed that her BLS expired. She is glad she didn't have to re-cert. What do you think of this?

Feb 22, 201412 yr Maybe I have a lax conscious, but it wouldn't bother me. If she were saying, "I don't remember how to do CPR. I hope my patient doesn't code!" ...that would bother me more.

But that just means next year they will say what they taught you now is wrong. Some require it updated every year and others every two years. Being a little late taking the class again probably won't hurt.
Feb 22, 201412 yr Experts My employers can "forget" to provide my paycheck, but they surely won't forget to request my CPR update.
Feb 22, 201412 yr Experts Two years. That is very telling about both the individual and the employer.

What do you think of this?I think it shows how little she cares about her reputation. I take pride in keeping up with my certifications on my own. It's part of being a professional.
Feb 23, 201412 yr It's one thing to quietly "one up" the system (and in this situation, I don't agree- she could harm her own license.) It's quite another to brag about it. This to me is a red flag. And in poor taste!Sent from my iPhone using allnurses.com

Feb 23, 201412 yr This is horrible. Lots of research from both AHA and ARC show that people, including health care professionals, forget more than half of what they learn in a CPR class within 6 months. She absolutely needs to be reported. Don't you have to submit your current BLS card when you reapply for your nursing license? I know that you do to maintain your paramedic credentials.
Feb 24, 201412 yr Guides Ventmommy, in my state we just need to put our continuimg education hours, which could theoretically be a BLS course. I believe the reason could be current BLS is considered more important and deficiencies more likely caught by surveyors than by random audits done by the BON. Although I'm not familiar with the survey process firsthand, I'm very familiar with urgent calls received by myself and coworkers as survey time gets near.As far as the nurse here I'd have serious concerns about the apparent kick she gets from skirting the rules and judgement in bragging about it to a coworker, although in this case the ultimate benefit will be to the patient, because even a sloppy agency would need to act on a report like that from the OP.
Feb 24, 201412 yr Irresponsible of that nurse to let her certification lapse if she is gainfully employed. Our continuing education is OUR responsibility, not the agency's. Bad....bad....bad.....
