Hi
I am currently in the RN-BSN program thru Excelsior College and NOT looking forward to the clinicals. With other online schools, do some offer a different type clinical? Is the school timed study? Or self study, where you study and test out when you are ready, not like in having a deadline for classes.
What schools are recommended?
Thanks so much!

I'm in the RN to BSN program at Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences. It's NLN approved. http://www.onlinenursing.fhchs.edu/
The have no clinicals. I've only just now finished the first course, so I don't know what the future lies, but any outside work has to do with your place of employment. For instance interviewing people, attending meetings, making presentations, writing about your job and people you work with, and following a manager around for a day, that sort of thing.

With so many RN-BSN programs popping up left and right, I don't know why anyone (who's already an RN) would put themselves through Excelsior's horrendous clinical exams. Every RN-BSN program I've looked at other than them has absolutely no clinical exams whatsoever. They have some clinical experiences like following a nurse manager around or something like that but no one with a clipboard and white coat standing over you checking off your every move and it's pass or fail.
Too nerve-wracking.
Even University of Phoenix would be a better option but I know some graduates who have told me that it is very expensive.
Start by searching online for state universities and colleges all over your state so that you can get in-state tuition. Then look to see which schools offer nursing degree programs, then their school of nursing web pages will usually advertise if they offer online BSN completion programs and if any require any on-campus time. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't at least one or two BSN completion programs offered at your state's colleges/universities.
Another option (again more expensive than state university tuition) is Drexel University in Philadelphia. No campus visits whatsoever, completely online and can be done no matter where you live.
I went to the Florida Hospital website and they too, seemed to be worth looking into.
Many choices out there these days for RN's going on to BSN.

I did the University of Phoenix BSN completion - clinicals were just following people around - no skills testing, nothing stressful. Yes, it is expensive: however, its quick (18 months), easy, and oops did I say quick already??? (I'm not getting any younger, that's for sure - so the speed with which to accomplish my goal was paramount for me).

I take online with JAcksonville U online RN-BSN. I like the classes but I am FREAKING out now due to my upcoming Nursing Research course :uhoh21: I am scared. Just finished Bioethics and that was fine except for all those papers! (one a week about). It's necessary for online classes to have lots of papers (they tell me), I guess since it keeps out the cheaters for the most part.

I also am in the UOP program. It is expensive but it moves right along and it is well organized. There is no clinical per say but I did have to do community assessments and visit homeless shelter, Women In transition and do a in depth family and community assessment for one of my courses. The courses currently are about 1200.00 for a five week course. Although I looked into 2 online programs in my state and the cost was almost the same. I cannot imagine going back to a tradtional classroom. I like the freedom to do my work daily when I can fit it into my schedule. I have met the most fascinating nurses and have learned so much from my classmates as well as from my professors.
I even did 3 math courses online which I never thought I would be able to do but with their help and the tutorials I did ok.
Tell me about it. I just finished my seveth paper! One more to go and I'm done with this course. Next I move on to Statistics and then Research. Good luck and let us know how you're doing!

NO clinicals!!!
Dundee Univeristy in Scotland...distance learning by modules. You pick four areas of care you are interested in and do research, papers, etc.
NLN approved in the United States!! Price is only 2,500 to start and then another 5 grand to finish, total is around $7,500 last time I checked.
Hey Traveler and Sparkplug - have you guys considered doing the MSN at UofP? I decided just to go ahead and finish with UofP but wondered if anyone else did.
I have but I am not sure what to do my MSN in any thoughts

I too am "attending" UoP online. I'm taking my 3rd class now and love it! It is sooooo much work and very demanding, but the perks are great. School at any time that is convenient for me (usually after my 2, 4 and 6 year old are in bed) and meeting people with different experiences worldwide. I would like to roll it right into my Masters but I am so far from that and not sure which direction I would go in. You?
