After working and going to school full time to become a nurse, I finally graduated earlier during the summer. I went from being busy everyday, to having four days off! I found myself get bored to death by the second day off . My social schedule is not as demanding as Paris Hilton's, but I am not a loaner. I always have one or two social things to do during the week, but nothing special.
Anyway, it hit me when one of my co-workers was talking to me about how she loved rock climbing, and another could not look forward to his taekwando class; I have nothing else I am actively passionate about other than nursing! How sad I thought... I had always toyed with the idea of taking up a sport, a hobby, or getting involved in some kind of club when I had the time and some money. Finally, I have both! So, I ordered a tennis racket and balls online, and found a private tennis instructor (only 25 bucks an hour!). Now, I hope to make it my new hobby.
So, tell me nurses what are you passionate about aside from nursing? Are you a full time mum/dad on your days off, do you have a hobby, do you just enjoy your quite time with a nice book? I'm curious to know, what do you do on your days off???

Not a nurse yet (hope I am still welcome here :) ).
I spend my days off and usually my days working or at school doing 4 hours of aerobic exercise/weights amd Tai Chi. The rest of the time is work, study, allnurses, eating and sleeping.
Hopefully by the time I get my license I can be in enough shape to have have an exotic hobby like rock climbing. :)

Recently spent some days at the beach. Was on vacation
Most often if I am not working I am cleaning the house, the pool, mowing the grass and taking care of the many gardens( gardening is my hobby) on our property.. I listen to alot of audio books while I am driving back and forth to work ( its a long drive) I need to work more so I can afford to hire someone to do some of my work . Therefore freeing me up to play more.

I love to read. I also bowl. Have 2 kids that are really active, so days off are spent cleaning, reading, laundry, carting kids back and forth to Karate classes, swimming lessons and baseball, etc. Now that they are back in school, I will be able to meet my girlfriends for lunch or a movie every now and then.

I sleep. By the time I have time off work, thats about all I feel like doing unfortunately. I wish I had the energy and will to get out and have fun. I feel like an old woman and Im only 36.

First thing I do is sleep in! After I have gotten my rest, I catch up with family/friends. I also like to take trips, either day trips or longer trips depending on how many days off I have. I love to see new places. I am currently on a travel assignment and havent had time to be bored, there is always something to do!

Ummmmmm ... I'm going back to school ... RN-BSN. That, and I can finally get back to my bellydance class now that my schedule has changed so that I'm off on the appropriate afternoon/evening. Yay!!
I also recaulked the bathtub during my last multi-day-stretch-off-of-work. I'm trying to get caught up on all those little things that went to the back-burner. My yard is a MESS. (The weeds, however, are doing quite well.)

Since I've started working, I sleep on my days off. I didn't think this was normal and wondering if anybody else does this. It's starting to get me down and making me feel depressed. I just feel tired and want to sleep most of the day. I'll wake up when my daughter gets home from school, but that's about it. I don't like being this way.:zzzzz

Much as I need to work to keep my health insurance, the more days I have off away from work, the better. I use my money to enjoy hobbies away from work. I enjoy spending time on days off with family and friends, but look at my username and you'll get an idea of the hobby to which I am most passionately devoted to.
I hear you and feel much of your pain.. When I worked nights, I felt like a Benedictine monk, living my entire waking life for nursing (12 hour shifts). That got so depressing that I couldn't stand it anymore and quit to work at a facility that had 8 hour shifts. Unless you are absolutely fanatical about the work, this will drag you down big-time.

I completely agree with you all I do when I am off is sleep. (at least that is what it seems like!!!) Of course, I do work night shift and it has been a hard adjustment especially when you have kids. We do try and go out to dinner or do something like a movie every now and then, but most of the time we stay here at the house. The 4 days go by so quickly especially when your first day off you actually worked that day because you were still at work at 0715 in the morning!!!!
