Nurses and Dream Specialty?

Featured Replies

Exactly. I have the best job in the world!

Pediatric intensive care. Yes, I love it, just like I thought I would.

I wanted to work in the PICU when I went into nursing school. When the time rolled around to start applying for jobs (last semester of nursing school), it just was not an option. I was already working as a tech in the ER, and a lot of other people were having difficulty finding jobs so I applied for their intership and was hired.

When I was offered a position in PICU at a children's hospital, I was sooo excited to be working my "dream job". The excitement was short lived though, because as it turned out, I pretty much hated it.

A lot of my nurse friends found their "dream job" wasn't as dreamy as they thought it would be. Thankfully there are many different areas in nursing to persue!

I have absolutely no desire to work acute care---never have. I love my hospice job and I'm sometimes amazed that they actually pay me to do this. I'd say it's my dream job.

CCU. Love it. So happy. :)

Yes and no. I want to do home health or public health, but right now, I'm working in med/ surg. However, I applied to only med/ surg jobs because I felt it would give me a good foundation for what I want to do outside of the hospital. I can't really say that there is another in-hospital area that I would want to work in, except maybe ER, but I'm not that strongly drawn to it.

No, I am not working in my dream specialty yet. I hope to be someday. I have applied for the OR since 2009, to no avail. I currently work in LTC. I do have an interview Monday for med-surg. If I get this job, I am hoping that this is my chance to make it to the OR. Hopefully, someday !!

Wishing you luck

ER. Can't believe they actually pay me to do this stuff.

I am in the OR, love it and it is my dream specialty. Got in after I graduated nursing school and I have no regrets.

I feel the same way! I'm in the OR, which is the reason I started nursing school. I find it so interesting that it makes the day fly by! Some of the stuff I see in there is so freaking crazy, I love it!

I am on my way to the dream job!

Because I worked as a tech in a ED I always thought I would never be happy anywhere else in nursing, possibly peds, but even then I wanted peds ED.

Applied to all the internship programs didn't get in, sadly the hospital I worked for decided NO NEW GRAD!

So long term care was where I went, dreaming of some place better.

So in desperation to get out of the LTC area I started applying to anything I could in a large health system, 220 applications for various positions before I heard back and got an interview for their LTC medically fragile childrens unit!!

I was hired into an oncall position, so I am still at my SNF/LTC, but so far I love it, I could see myself easly putting in 30 years, you can see the staff is there for the kids, I call it "My happy job" becasue for the most part everyone is so happy to be there, they are there because they want to be.

If I am unable to secure a full time position, I am hoping to take this expereince and transition into acute care peds position at my areas children hospital and keep my oncall status there. I could also see myself working in the NICU
