No cna's ??

I just got my first RN med-surg position and during the interview she said they don't have any cna's right now?!?!? How can this be?? I took the job because I'm a new grad and I don't have many options....I am nervous about this!!

Are you nervous because there aren't any cnas? What did you apply for , and what is the concern for not having cnas?

I would be nervous too! CNAs in my opinion make the day much easier. If I had to take VS, BS, bathe, and toilet in addition to passing meds, admitting, discharging, charting, and communicating with doctors, I wouldn't have nearly enough time in my shift to adequately care for my patients.

OP: is this temporary? Are they working on getting CNAs?

wow, what is the nurse to pt ratio??

This not unusual where I am in Canada. Most hospitals don't have any aides of any kind.My floor does but only for the last couple of years and other units don't have any. When I was in school we learned how to provide personal care so we know how to do so when there are no aides.

It's not knowing how to do it, it's having enough time to do it all. I honestly don't know how units run not having CNAs. I hardly get my work done as is.

I am too curious your (OP) ratio.

Oh so sorry, I didn't mean not knowing how to.That was rude.lol I meant that when I did my placements and consolidation there were no aides so it was part of our time management.I have to admit I feel awfully spoiled now to not have to do all my cares. I still do some but not all.

I worked on a Med-Surg floor for two years that did not employ CNAs. Sure, it is hard work. However, you will learn great organization/time skills. But a down part of this is that more than likely all of your patients will not get the needed personal hygiene care they require daily if they are not able to do it themselves. I am now employed at a different hospital on a Med-Surg floor and there are usually 3-4 CNAs each day. It is amazing... So amazing. The day flows much better with them and I am grateful for all the hard work they do. It may seem a little scary at first but it does get easier.

I love having an aide but we don't always get one. The worst part is waiting for a patient to potty while I'm having 20 other things to do. I don't mind it at all if it weren't for the fact that I have things to do that no one else can.

some hospitals dont have any aides and use that to boast about an all rn staff. aides are soooo useful i hate working without them . it is actually more cost efficent for hospitals to have them. i work nights so we do all transporting without aides that would mean 2 rns off the floor at ct scan or something else. not practical

Hahahah come to Australia! Nurses perform ALL cares, it's part of the job over here. What a difference in nursing culture...

I die a little inside when I hear they canceled our OB Tech/CNA. It's such a hard day when they aren't there

One of my good friends works on a medical unit with no CNAs... she loves it.

If you have good CNAs, they can make your day easier... my experience in the hospital was with lazy ones- I'd have rather had none at all. If I started my day knowing that I had to do vitals, baths, all I&Os, etc. I could arrange my day better from the start. As it was, I'd start my day thinking I had a CNA helping me with my 2 heavy patients but at 10am, no vitals were done, no Is&Os were entered, no beds were changed, patients hadn't even been offered baths and the CNAs were sitting down eating breakfast or hiding in the locker room talking on their phones. At night, we'd often find them sleeping. So then, I'd be scrambling to make up for stuff they didn't do and would get behind. Overall, I don't think lack of CNAs is any sort of red flag- the unit may run just fine, ask a lot of questions!
