Please clarify..you said in your post that the pts narcs weren't prescribed so you didn't give them to her then you say you had them in a bag?...Did someone count and verify with you the amount of narcotics present before it was placed in a bag to hand to the pt?
Not to alarm you, but if you did indeed leave a bag with narcotics lying around, expect to have a very big deal made of this, including drug testing, etc. Just try to be calm and matter of fact and give your version of events. Hope everything works out OK.

As I am trying to figure out. It sounds like your intention while discharging a patient was to return their home medications they had brought in but were not prescribed for at the time of discharge. Is that correct?
If so, we return all medications which a patient brings into the hospital with them regardless of whether they are currently prescribed or not. They are advised that this is no longer prescribed at this time and do they wish us to dispose of them at this time or do they want to do it when they are home.
Your DON will look into events , they will try and discover what happened to said narcotics. Write down events as you recall them, each and every detail.

If I understand your post, you lost a bubble wrapped card of narcotics.
This happened at place I worked at. The cops were called in after the DON was notified. Those involved were interviewd by the DON, then suspended pending investigation, then some were fired. The department of health came in for a facility wide survey and to do interviews. The nurses that were fired took their case to court I think to argue unfair termination. I don't know what kinds of charges were filed or how it turned out though. Sorry this happened, but might need to chalk it up to a lesson learned the hard way.

Wow...it is hard to read.
Looks like you had all of the meds including narcs ready for d/c. Heard an alarm go off, went in to help then forgot bag o meds in that room. When you went back, you found narcs missing from that bag???
Okay...there are lots of things wrong. Never, ever leave narcs unattended. I've been in situations where the crap hit the fan (I was signing in narc cards and someone literally had a heart attack in front of me)...first thing I did was try to secure those narcs, while assessing the situation. I ended up putting them in my waist band....not comfy or the best for infection control, but they never left my sight or body. I've seen nurses put a card down for a second and poof....they were gone. Staff and residents seem to know which cards are "the good stuff" For one, when they are checked in, they come separate.
Why didn't you fill out a report/ statement? Why didn't you report them missing asap?

There are really no options here. Expect and prepare for the worst. Start checking around to see what's out there if you have to find a new job right away. That's the most helpful advice I can come up with. Be ready to move on.

If I'm reading it correctly, you had a bag full of meds, some narc's and the bag is missing? What you should do is write up an incident report - because, you messed up big time - and take your lumps. If you have any chance at salvaging you job, you must take responsibility for your error. Explain how you will follow the patients five rights next time etc... don't try to say "Mr D was standing on the bed naked so I put the meds down..." They may be what happen, but ultimately it's your error.
Be honest and upfront. Good Luck and keep us posted
Blessings

I don't understand about the written statement. You didn't give a written statement or you weren't asked to give one??
