Im starting my orientation on june 9 and im wondering what shoes would be best and comfiest for a 12 hour shift...help :)

There's a lot of threads on here about shoes.....I've been scouring them myself as my orientation starts in July (congrats by the way!)

It seems that shoes are a very subjective thing. IV been going to store after store trying on show after shoe and I'm still not decided yet. I love my Danskos, and I used to do 8-12 hour shifts in them when I worked food service. That being said, I have a lovely callous on my second metatarsal on my left foot and it hurts after 8 hours on my feet. I'm going to try the Dansko Pro XP this weekend and see if the additional cushioning helps.

I'll be working on an ICU step down unit, and from my shadowing day I can see I'll be walking more than standing, so I may try a walking shoe rather than a clog if the XP doesn't suit me. A friend wears Asics in the ED and swears by them, but she does do a fair bit of legitimate running in them on an average shift.

Thanks amy!!! Maybe have to find them now... :)

Sketchers Go Walk and Go Walk ultimate are really really comfortable. I've made a couple of nurses believers at my job.

Im going to try that too...id rather not do online shopping for shoes though :/

When I started nursing 4 yrs ago, within 6mos, I had horrible heel pain!! Went to the doc and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. He "prescribed" Asics. They were fine for 3 months with the help of steroid injections in both heels. Then the pain got worse. Then I spent $325 on orthotic insoles that the podiatrist mold for me... My feet started to get a whole lot better. I'm considered to have a low arch. I went back to "structured" Asics and I have very minimal pain!!! Still can't comfortably wear heels but doc says wedges r best for me. Hope this helps!!

I have to wear all white (leather) shoes with laces.. I tried on the asics foundation walker and it was sooo comfortable. Eventually I may go to danskos, but I wouldn't discount a good pair of sneakers.

I wear Nurse Mates and I hardly ever notice my feet in pain at all during a 12 hour shift, only after I get home and take my shoes off do I feel any pain. I wore reeboks in nursing school and after 4 hours my feet would kill me, I also waitressed for 5 years and I tried many shoes and always got very sore feet only 4 hours into a shift.

The best shoes are going to be what works for you. I only wear Alegrias because it is the only shoe that doesn't cause me to have foot, knee or back pain. And I can replace the insoles as needed. However, some of my co-workers only wear Danskos. What ever you get, make sure they fit your foot. DOn't go with something to narrow or too wide or you will regret it. And if you choose to go with a sneaker, check into stores that cater to runners to get a really good fit.

And give some consideration to support socks.

I wore Birkenstocks and also the "Klogs" brand in the "Naples" style which were amazingly comfy. The Klogs were my favorite though. Thick sole like danskos but soft, cushy, yet supportive.

I also have plantar fasciitis, and lo e my asics. I get the GT 2000s on amazon. Order a half size up.

I also wear Naples by Klogs. Up until this year I wore Saucony running shoes and LOVED them. Then I fractured my medial malleolus, tibia, and fibula, and when I returned to work had to wear a brace, this wore my Saucony's down fast. The hospital I work at now has a pretty strict policy when it comes to shoe color so I bought a pair of Sketcher's at the uniform store... awwwwwwwwwwwful. By the time I got home and got out of the tub I had to crawl to the

closet for my crutches, the pain was so bad.

The next day I wore my Brooks (which I use for running) and told my manager I'd get some appropriate shoes asap. Luckily we had a shoe sale in the lobby that day (which amused the heck out of patients and visitors alike) and I was able to try on several different types of shoes. Dansko's were too hard and difficult to fit correctly due to my brace....

Then the sales clerk pointed me to Klogs. Hallelujah! I got the Naples in tooled black leather and don't regret it at all. They are so comfortable I find myself wearing them outside of work too. The best part is the leg & ankle I broke seem to be getting stronger in these shoes and I've been able to work some partial shifts without my brace on.

All in all I would recommend Saucony's, Brooks, or Klogs.
