LVN to MD

Nurses General Nursing

Updated:   Published

I have my LVN license and a degree in Journalism. I'm planning on going to school to become a doctor but I'm not sure if my LVN GPA, (not my courses) will count towards the admission process. If it does count, then my GPA will be pretty high and I'll have more options open for me. I was told to submit all my transcripts from all colleges to AMCAS and that my GPA will be averaged out. But, I just want to be sure my LVN GPA will count toward something. Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

If you attained your vocational/practical nursing education at a regionally accredited community college, then there's a chance that the grade point average from your LVN courses will count. However, I would almost guarantee that the GPA from a trade school or business college won't be counted if the school lacks regional accreditation.

Of course, only the medical school(s) to which you'll apply will have the definitive answer to your questions. Good luck to you!

Sorry I cant respond to your question, but an ovation to you.

No it won't, and neither will anything from your journalism degree. For sure, and absolutely.

You'll have to get another full-term undergraduate degree in bio, chemistry or whatever your medical school wants to see before going there, b/o hem, bio and all other stuff put together you've learned for your LPN is like 5% of what you're supposed to know as a medical student.

A pre-med student can major in anything as long as they have completed the medical school prerequisites somewhere along the way. For example, my former gynecologist's undergrad degree was in general business. He never earned a degree in biology, biochemistry, or anything of that nature.

Almost the entirety of this post is INCORRECT.

Facts:

  • Some medical schools do not require a bachelors degree
  • Most medical schools do, but it could be in underwater basket weaving for all they care
  • The OP (presumably holding a bachelors in Journalism) will only have to take the pre-reqs
  • ALL grades from any college coursework ever taken at an accredited school will count and will be figured into his admission GPA (AMCAS will count every grade equally but AACOMAS will do grade replacement).

The only way you will know anything is if you speak with your admissions people. Nobody here can help you towards that kind of thing.

People get into med school with undergrad degrees in all kinds of subjects, as long as they've completed the specific courses required as prerequisites. Some med schools specifically look for people with degrees in areas other than the hard sciences (believing that people with a broader background of knowledge and interests make better physicians).

(Just as an aside, my father went to med school with a BA in English literature, but that was so long ago that I'm not suggesting that has any bearing on the OP's situation.)

OP, I don't have anything to add to the previous answers regarding your GPA from your LVN program. AFAIK, it will depend on the accreditation of the school you attended.

Correct. I majored in history, also did the pre-med coursework, and got into med school. I did this a long, long time ago: at that time, the pre-reqs were Calculus A & B, Bio A,B,C, Physics A,B,C (not the physics for physics majors), Inorg Chem A,B,C, and Organic Chem A,B. And, at that time, you pretty much had to ace all the courses. I don't know about now.

Ohhhhhhh, that part never changes ... :lol2:

The school is accredited. Your post was so helpful, thank you!

That was helpful, thanks so much!
