Job Hopping...

It depends. In my experience, some health care employers are alot more selective than others. In some facilities/hospitals, you will barely get an interview b/f they hire you. Others put you through a very extensive hiring/interviewing process, including scrutinizing your job history.

I will be starting a BSN program in May of 06' (I hold a BA in psych) but I worry that the job hopping I did in my 20's is going to hurt my chances of landing a nursing job. For example I got my teaching credential at 29 but left the field after one year. I than stayed home with my son for a year and finally got serious about having a career. At 31 I landed a job as a social worker. I stayed there for 2 1/2 years and when I saw the opportunities in nursing decided that it would be great for my family and myself. I have good letters of recommendation from everywhere I've been, and outstanding ones from my stint as a social worker. I have never been fired and never left a job on bad terms. OTOH, I have held 6 jobs since graduating college.

I loved my pre-requisites and can't wait to start nursing school still worry that my, "job hopping days" will hurt my chances of landing a job. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Since you had very good reasons for changing jobs and held a couple of jobs for over a year, I don't think you are "job hopping". Good luck in your studies, I think you will find you will have no trouble getting employment.

At my hospital they just need a pulse. I didn't get asked any past history they just wanted to know what I was looking for.

I don't think it will be a problem for you - I have done my share of "job hopping" (far more drastic than yours) in the past and it has never been a hinderance for me. I wouldn't worry too much about it at all - especially once you become a nurse - that alone will show commitment. Of course, I am just in pre-nursing myself, but I work for social services and I see a lot, so I highly doubt it will be an issue for you. If my welfare/food stamp clients who have never held a job in their lives or have been fired numerous times can find employment, so can you.

And you think nurses don't job hop?

Relax, I'm 35 and the longest I've ever stayed in one place is 5 years and that was in my 20's working in a restaurant.

I've had one negative interview because of my job and state hopping.

He looked at my resume and said "You've lived in 4 different cities in 8 years? That doesn't seem very stable to me."

I told him in the most polite way I could think of that he could have figured that out from looking at my resume instead of wasting my time coming to an interview since he already made up his mind that I wasn't "home grown-native son Texan" enough for his good-ole-boys club.

Nursing jobs are a dime a dozen in most areas, and if they aren't in your area, then you need to move.

I have a psych background also and have been job hopping for a long time, until now. My job hopping has never come up. I think you will be just fine!! Good luck to you!
