I got found out!

I always end up confessing, mostly because I'm young looking I always get asked what high school/college I go to. When I say been there done that, they ask about my major and/or job. It has only negatively impacted me once of the few times it has happened, but that doctor was a jerk! I was getting my pupils dilated and I always have a hard time with eye drops, so I was struggling with opening my eyes and he scolds "listen I know you're a nurse, but I know what I'm doing and you need to let me do my job!" What??? I wasn't even going there, why are you going there!?

I've been ready to be done since the start of my third trimester, lol. And it's been downhill from there. It's clearly an evolutionary thing to make us ready to have the baby. I looked in the nursery and saw it full of baby stuff and had two days of panic and "omg I am not ready for this!" and then started to be really, really uncomfortable and sick of sharing my body and am now "let's go, time to get out, OUT OUT OUT!"

My ortho doc is from my hospital, so there was no secret there. It was nice, though, as he was able to specifically talk to me about the challenges of bedside nursing with crappy knees - how to stand, move, etc.

I have always been open about that fact that I am a nurse when seeking care for myself, mostly because I can't stand being explained things in laymen's terms. I want detailed and accurate descriptions, not to be spoken to as though I'm 10 years old. If I don't understand something I will ask for clarification.

My aunt was at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in CCU for months, I was always there with her, and her doctors always thought I was a nurse. That was several years ago, and I'm starting nursing school in the Fall. It took me a while to realize I was in the wrong career, but when I did, things are moving quickly.

I would always have doctors/nurses ask me if I was a nurse because I would give detailed H&P and med reconciliation, etc. And friends, coworkers, and neighbors would always seek me out for medical advice, in spite of the fact that I'm a bean-counter by profession.

Finally, at 44yo, I'll be getting my ADN next month. Figure if everyone's gonna come to me for medical stuff anyway, I might as well be getting paid for it!

The vet knew I was a nurse, I think my observations of the cats bowel and bladder habits gave it away...

When my dad was sick in the ICU (ended up passing) I actually outed myself and my step-mom outed herself. I feel that they would have taken great care of my dad anyway, but the doctors were able to talk to us in greater detail about what was going on.

I guess I'm backwards then. I'll mention it especially when they ask for your occupation on the new pt forms. I know when I'm working and my pt is a nurse, I'm more likely to use the lingo and not have to translate medical speak into English and I'm more aware of my technique, so I assume all nurses are like that. If my nurse knows I'm a nurse, they're less likely to skip a step because I know how it's supposed to be done properly. :)[/quote']

Yes, exactly. I will tell them I am a nurse. I hate having to hear everything 'dumbed-down'. I also feel like they might be more careful if they know I know what to look for, what is acceptable or not.
