G.P.A....

quick question that i haven't found the answer to in my research.

when applying for nursing programs (adn, bsn, etc...) do they go off your overall (college) g.p.a or your g.p.a. for the pre-requirements?

i'm almost done with my b.a. in sociology and some of my grades are not spectacular, but my grades for the nursing pre-requirements i have taken have all been pretty good. i'm hoping they will just go off of those....

thanks!!!

Each school/program is different. For my ABSN program, they looked at the GPA you graduated with and the prerequisite GPA (both are treated separately). They wanted your previous GPA to be a minimum of 3.0 and your total prerequisite science classes had to be a minimum of 2.75.

Again, every program is different, so you're not going to get a "generalized" answer. You would need to find out through your school of choice as to what they factor in for acceptance.

It depends on the school.

The first school I applied to looked at my entire GPA from the beginning of time (>20yrs ago).

But, the second school I will be applying to looks at the GPA from specified pre-reqs (biochem, AP, etc) and the GPA from the last 45 overall credits. They weigh them, then combine them to get your total GPA.

They go off just the pre-reqs, particularly the science ones (A&P, micro, nutrition).

At my school they go soley off nursing pre-reqs. It doesnt matter what any of your other grades are because dont even go on the application.

As mzchas said each school is different. The one I am applying to factors both the overall GPA and the hard science GPA (A&P 1&2, Chem, and Micro), and retakes are averaged. But there are schools that just take prereq, and schools that just take the last x hours. Schools that don't allow retakes or W's. And to add to the confusion there are GPA req from a 2.0 all the way to a 3.5 (min req to apply, not min req to be accepted).

I was told that my school looks at both. My admissions adviser had to recommend me for the program and before she did that she was all about my GPA from my last degree. Then once I got started on the program bandwagon, the Director was interested in my pre-req GPA.

I think it depends on the school but it really helps when you have shown you are competent in your studies elsewhere, I think it makes you a stronger candidate.

The school I'm applying to only using the your GPA of the pre-reqs required for the nursing program. (A&PI & II, Micro, Chem, and etc.).

In my area of Florida, the community colleges go by the pre-req GPA only. The four year universities goes by your overall GPA.

Not necessarily. The 4 year universities in Florida also differ greatly. University of North Florida considers your prereq GPA, University of Central Florida considers your overall GPA, and the University of Florida considers the GPA of the last 60 undergrad credits completed.

^^^^ So true!!!

My university looks at the overall GPA. I wish it went by

only the science GPA because then I would be so much more less stressed.
