I'm new here and full of curiosity, so excuse my "getting to know you" type questions.
I was wonder what material everyone is covering right now for those that began school this semester.
We're studying acid-base balance, electrolytes, and GI tract disorders.
What about you??

I've had to read the Maternal/Newborn book over the summer, so suffice it to say that'll be in our material when we begin this upcoming week. I know that also we'll have development for peds, oncology and the remaining of F&E. Whew......3 more terms....3 more terms....3 more terms. I have to keep telling myself that!

Our first Fundamentals class was only 5 weeks long - finished it last week. We covered: history of nursing, communication, sexuality, self-concept, spirituality, ethics, cultural awareness, rest and sleep, needs and development, teaching and learning, and roles of the professional nurse.
When I look at this list, we covered a good bit in 10 lectures. I start the 2nd level next week, which will last 10 weeks. This is when we actually get into the skills lab. I am excited!!

Our program is different than most I read about. We spend the first semester studying health promotion with the idea that we have to know what health is first before learning what sick is. Because of the way classes go, many of us are unsure of our first test which is next week. I understand how the NCLEX style works in our clinical and lab classes, but our lecture classes will be interesting for questions, to say the least. We will not start pathopharmacology or any of the "normal" nursing classes until next semester.
Does any other school spend a whole semester on health promotion?
As far as health promotion it was the first lecture we had...it was about people 2010...but it def. was not the whole semester...thats kinda a bummer that you have to spend that much time on it, although it is mportant...and I am also curious about our first exam which will be next monday because I have a hard time trying to figure out how the questions will be...but we will also have skills questions included...soooo much info!!!

KentuckyRN2Be, I also did a full semester of Health promotion but I also go to a Kentucky school. I know that seems boring but it is helpful and makes sense in the long run.
To answer intensity_too: I am in my final semester so we are currently covering ventilators, respiratory failure, resumes and cover letters.
