Drug Testing

Just curious how often your program tests, mine is at random. Not saying I do anything, but if I'm ever out in Colorado...

You won't just be tested in school. I have been an RN for 10 years and have been tested at least 4 times a year for 10 years straight. And if you make a major error they can order you give a sample right then. If you come up positive....well...good luck because you are on your own at that point.

But truthfully, why even risk it? Is smoking weed really more important than your entire future career?

Doesn't matter if you go to Colorado where it's legal or not.

In your system=out of the program (generally).

I believe schools and employers reserve the right to randomly test. My guess is its in the fine print somewhere.

What is more important? Weed or your future nursing career? Pick one & stick with it.

I'm guessing the OP is just making idle chit-chat, and isn't saying he'd really do anything to risk his place in the program. I think. I hope!

I'm sure CO nurse still are drug tested. Tobacco is legal but hospitals test for that.

Always a complicated situation where illegal meets legal....and Policy is different from Law.

I work in the Federal system and it doesn't matter what is legal where, LOL.....my employer says I'd better not be on any of it!

I think it would depend on hospital policy. If they say no, it's no regardless of legality. My former employer eventually implemented a no smoking policy halfway through my employment. Those that smoked prior to the policy were grandfathered in, but all new employees had to be non smokers otherwise they'd risk termination if it were found out they were smoking (even off the clock/at home).

I know many hospitals around here require employees to be non smokers. Not just on break/in uniform, but period. I'd imagine policy being similar for hospitals regarding areas where weed is legal. I'm not saying that is the case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were.

I live in California. CA nurses caught with a positive UDS for THC can and do face disciplinary action from both employers AND the BRN, even if they're holding a medical marijuana card in hand. I imagine that Colorado isn't much different.

Just because the drug is legalized in the state doesn't mean that employers and boards of nursing have to look the other way and ignore its use.
