Do you think it's right for nurses that are going to school do their homework at work

If I was working full time...and had everything done and it was a quiet night..yeah I'd do that. When else am I gonna do it? 1-3 am??

there is nothing wrong in educating yourself. however , there are several nurses on my unit that are going to school and working. they bring their work assignment to work. type of their reports at work,do homework at work during working hours. not on their breaks. what do you think about this.?

depends on where you work. while doing my pre-reqs i worked nights at an adult foster home. once everyone was in bed for the evening, as long as i had my work done (laundry, dishes, etc) i was welcome to do homework.

I don't have a problem with it. So long as the work is done/being done and they are helping answer call bells, not a problem.

Now if they are pawning their work onto other staff members so they can get their schoolwork done, THEN I'd have a problem. They are getting paid to work, not to do schoolwork.

I dont think so because the work environment requires attentive care.

One of the factors that needs to be considered is that many RNs going to school are in fact educating themselves on work related subjects. Its not such a bad thing that a RN is doing homework on lets say, Health Assessment, Professional Nursing, or Patient Education.

The nice thing about nurses studying at work is many times they disseminate their education amongst their peers. Many times discussions have been opened between peers about a study someone was having to read.

I'm a night shift PCT so I always bring homework just in case. When I get assigned to a 1:1 observation and they're asleep, what else am I going to do?? I've gotten tons of homework done this way. Most of the time I only work on it during my dinner break, but it's nice to have there just in case!

My DON specifically told me when I was in school that I was allowed to do my homework as long as my work was done.

no disrespect to the op but i think you need to mind your own business .... why does it concern you? how is your ability to perform safe patient care being adversely affected?

I think it depends on the circumstances. If you have a very low patient count, and the supervisor/DON is ok with it, then I don't see why not. On the other hand, most nurses that I've seen do this, ARE to one degree or another shirking their responsibility to monitoring their patients, often times leaving aides to do more work, and additionally they have no permission from CN or DON to do homework during their paid work hours. OP, I don't think it's as simple as a yes or no answer.

I always did it and still do. My company is flipping the education bill, so technically its job related.
