Yes, I know someone who couldn't work as a nurse anymore after her daughter died of cancer and went back to school for Social Work.
I also know someone who decided working with humans wasn't for her and went to Vet School.
I did work with a nurse for many years who used to talk frequently about leaving nursing to go work for the post office. She's still a nurse on the same floor though.

One acquaintance of mine went from nursing to law. I think she's now an attorney in malpractice cases. One of the IT guys in my corporation was a former nurse, and he now deals mostly with project management.

I know a guy in med school who has about 8 years of experience in ED/Trauma/ICU who is in his second year of med school. I also deployed with an Army surgeon (now a vascular surgeon) who used to be an ICU nurse. My ex's stepmother was an RN for decades, but left it for real estate. Just a few examples off the top of my head!

I know lots of nursing who left traditional bedside and went to work in various healthcare related careers in things like statistics, marketing, sales, product development/R&D, healthcare lobbying, etc.
