cpne failures

Just failed CPNE. Took a bp on an arm with a running iv of NS. We do this all the time in ER. Seemed pretty harsh to fail for that. Any comments?:crying2:

It doesn't take much to fail, while some people get away with things and still pass. Sometimes it turns out to be a $5000 crapshoot (test, hotel, travel, and expenses).

Now it will take me another 6 months to save for the next trip!

i'm sorry for the fail. i heard a lot of people fail on little things. now, you know what to expect and hopefully will be successful on the next try. good luck.

This must have been a repeat PCS; what happened during the others?

Doing the BP on the same side as the IV is a point of failure; it falls under that "complies with established guidelines" area. A lot of people fail a PCS for the simple things, like pumping the BP cuff too high, or not waiting long enough between taking a BP. Or you can be like me, and fail a PCS for not properly IDing the patient within the first few minutes of being in the room. Heh.

I am so sorry you weren't successful this time. It's important to do everything the "Excelsior way" during the CPNE, so the things we do in the ER may not fly during that stressful weekend! Now that you've been there once, you'll know what to expect when you go back. :)

not to be funny, but try and remember not to include the "real world" into your studies.

even though you may have seen a BP in the arm with the running IV, try and think about what is happening to the pt's fluid intake when the cuff is squeezing the arm. and in the ER, some of those lines really need to be monitored. I work in the ER as a tech so i can relate to what your saying, but in a few short moments, we will be the nurse and will be held accountable. and we have to apply TEXTBOOK KNOWLEDGE, because when we take the NCLEX, they will be checking for the "textbook answer' and not the "real world answer"

hope this helps!!!

Reading these freaks me out for the CPNE....I would hate to go that far, pay all that money & fail:crying2: Did you take a CPNE workshop? Just curious......& good luck on your next CPNE, I hope you pass with flying colors:D

First off that sucks and I'm sorry to hear it ((HUGS)). Now, get in your CPNE study guide (make sure you get the 17th edition) and learn things their way. They lay it all out for you just the way they like it. If you failed for the BP you should have been allowed to repeat the PCS. Did they let you repeat it ?

The CPNE is totally do-able if you can memorize the critical elements in the study guide. They tell you exactly what you can or cannot do. I envisioned myself a robot, doing things the EC way during my CPNE.

I also used to panic when I was a student, reading posts about the folks that failed. You have to remember that it's not one thing that fails a student. You get to repeat patient care scenarios if you fail an area of care a certain amount of times, and can repeat lab scenarios the next day. I can't remember how many repeats you can have (it's not many) but you are able to get a second chance at the minimum.

To the OP I am sorry you didn't pass, it is a rough weekend with lots of emotional and financial ties to it. Best wishes for next time~

What else caused you to fail? That is not the only thing that you did wrong that cause you to fail the CPNE. I think it would help relieve other people's anxieties by explained all your deficiencies. I took the CPNE and pass and I know that you have to do the following before the send you packing.

1. You can fail all your labs the first time around but you MUST pass them all the second time or it will cause you

to fail the CPNE

2. You can Fail 1 adult and 1 peds PCS but you MUST pass them both the second time or you will fail the CPNE.

3. I has a friend who failed because she drew 2 adult patients and failed them back to back on Saturday. I prayed that I would get and adult, peds, adult so that could atleast get me to Sunday, granted I passed my labs on Friday or Saturday.

I am sorry tou failed but you need to focus on the who picture. You can brush up on all the things you did wrong and take it again. Many do and are successfull.

Could you explain #3---- confused.... not to cpne yet, but reading all this does make me nervous!!

The CPNE is structured like below:

Friday-You do the 4 labs

Saturday- you have to do 2 patient care situations &

Make up labs if you failed any on friday

Sunday-You do 1 patient care situation or any make patient situations if you failed on Saturday.

On friday night you have to draw a card that tells you what order you will do your patient care situations.

You have to do 2 adults and 1 peds patient.

So I drew and got : 1 adult, 1 Pediatric, Adult was 3rd.

Some drew and got: 1Pediatric , Adult 2nd and Adult 3rd.

My friend drew and got: Adult 1st and 2nd and Pediatric 3rd.

Since my friend drew the adults for the 1st and 2nd she had to pass at Least 1 of them on that day because you can fail one adult and one peds. Well she failed both patients and that ended her CPNE on Saturday. If she had she drew the card that gave her 1 ped and 1 adult on that saturday, she could have come back on Sunday to repeat the adult patient. Hope this clears things up.
