Commute to your job?

Published

Hello. I am wondering how far is everyone commuting to work? What are your hours ? If you commute are you able to get out on time?

Lastly, if you do a 8-5 how do you balance work and family life?

Thanks in advance!

Hello! I will be starting my job in a few weeks. The hours are 9-5. I currently live about an hour away, so the commute will be rough at first. I live in an area that is saturated with NPs and it was tough to find a job. I plan on moving about 20 minutes closer to make my commute a little more manageable.

I commute about 40 minutes. I live in a city, so while everyone's coming here, I have mostly easy traffic during rush hour going the opposite direction. I work 9 to 5. Am up every morning at 5am for a 6am workout (usually spinning), get to work early to prep my day or clear out lingering charts. Afternoons if I don't stop to lift, I'm home with the wife by 6ish.

BSN runner congrats on your job!! Yea the market is indeed saturated!! What specialty are you working in?

DJmattee wow you wake up at 5 and working out! Thats awesome.

Do yall like a 9-5? Or would you rather do 3 12s?

I'm down 50 pounds this year from diet alone. Since then, I've found a new appreciation for cardiovascular exercise and prefer to set an example for my patients. If I'm talking to them about lifestyle choices, I need to exemplify that. Not just in weight loss, but in taking time for me to structure my days. Working out early gives me chill out time at work in the morning to catch up. This makes me less anxious at the end of the day where I have the most guarantee of everyone showing up and having tons of charting to accomplish.

I actually like my 5 day rotation despite the drive. Keeps me on a schedule. 10 or 12 hour days are too big of blocks when a commute is on the longer end.

I have a very flexible job but am on call from 0600-1700 M-F. I work approx 50-55 hours per week but have no set hours - as long as my pts are seen once per week.

I travel anywhere from 60-200 miles per day - I'm reimbursed for mileage. I've been doing this almost 13 years and don't mind driving.

I work in urgent care part time right now and commute ranges from 10 minutes to 35 minutes. Although it's 12 hours days (sometimes longer if patient come at the last minute), but it allows me a better work life balance because I work less days yet still have full benefits (just higher premiums as part time for medical/dental/vision). Salary is higher in this field, too. So for now, I'm happy where I am.

yes urgent care pays higher for sure

with NP saturation its hard for me to find urgent care full time I wish I could. Right now im just working PRN and average about 6-10 shifts a month but no guarantee of shifts

I currently have an interview for family practice with a company but its a 40 min drive 8-5 mon-fri

My average commute is 25 minutes (my practice has 3 offices and I rotate between them). I work 9-5 M-W, 10-6 Th, and 7:30-3 on Fridays and have 1 Friday off a month. I usually get out on time or pretty close to it. I hate long commutes, so distance has always been a big factor in my job searches.

My kids are grown and flown, but my life outside of work is very important to me. I need the down time and 12 hour shifts are too long for me.

I work at an FQHC primary care clinic in a very small town. My commute is literally 5 minutes. My hours are 8 am to 5 pm, M-F. I intend to move to a 4 day week of four ten-hour days later this year.

thanks for the response

4 tens is awesome!!! I wish i could hve that. I am currently a bit confused

i work urgent care Prn but have an interview with family practice 8-5 but 40 min commute

i feel with saturated market I don’t know if I can keep waiting for a family practice job WITH a big company

what do you think

I go to a few different LTC facilities, and the average drive is 10 minutes. I don't have set hours, but it takes about 30-35 hours a week to cover my caseload. I review charts remotely and do my documentation at home.

Sorry to hear about all this job market saturation, it is quite worrisome.
