Coaches drive me crazy!

Published

I am at a middle school and almost daily when I am trying to get out the door, some kid from after school athletics comes in for some minor boo boo. Same before school, they are waiting for me when I walk in the mornings.

I have told them numerous times what my hours are. One day they are going to send someone who has a more serious injury to an empty clinic. They don't even call on the radio or anything to see if I am even in the building. They just assume that I am.

I have given them bags full of first aid supplies and they never use them. I am just tired of it. After holding my bladder and not getting a break or a duty free lunch, by the afternoon- I am exhausted, hypoglycemic, and just plain ready to go.

what would happen if you put your skates on and left as soon as you could before the parade of ice pack seeking kiddos from getting hit by flying baseballs came your way? My guess is that the coach would have to open their dust covered first aid bag and get them a bandage or whatever they need. I would bring it up to your Athletic director (probably the principal) since you've already addressed it to them and the issue persists.

On a related note - i ask a student if they present me with a minor injury from yesterday what they did for it, if it was seen at home, what a parent did to treat it, ect... If the answer is nothing, a parent/ adult saw it and still did nothing, assuming it's not the type of injury that needs some type of obvious follow up (ie the "seriously - you didn't take you kid for an x-ray/stitches for this"), then i send them on their merry way.

I feel like I should shadow Flare for a week or so.

Coaches drive me nuts about the sports clearances. Kids have to have a physical on file if they are going to play, but in NYS a physical is only "required" in 7th and 10th. The old nurse used to make the calls to the parents to get the physicals.

I give the roster to the Coaches with the kids who don't have physicals and let them make the calls.

I do it, that way I know it gets done, correctly. They will not even look at the form, and some physicals will come in with a current print date but the ACTUAL date of the exam was 2 years ago.....

I do it as well. A couple of the high school coaches will email me, taking it on themselves, so that student can bring a copy and/or request a copy of their physical from me on their own (responsibility teaching - I love those coaches!).

Should I do it?

How about making the initial call and the follow up is on the Coach.

We have a before/after school program called ESP. They use to send kids to me first thing in the mornings until I finally went down and spoke to the director. I told her that what happens in ESP, stays in ESP. They need to handle everything from first aid, calling 911 if needed, and informing the parent. If they need to let me know of a child who has/had an injury or doesn't feel well and what they did about it then that is great! I want to know these things but don't send the kid to me when you haven't done a single thing to help them. Many times the parent wants to know how something happened and if it happened in ESP then I can't answer their questions because ESP workers go home right when school starts and don't come back until the very end of the day.

Oh...this could be a completely different thread. But I am going to chime in now. This used to be a complete thorn in my side. The coach/AD wouldn't work with me after repeated attempts, written requests, rants and raves, etc. I no longer try to keep track of the sports physicals. I want no part of it if I can't know that it is handled correctly. He is the AD....so he is responsible now!! :angrybird9:

I'm lucky to have the support of my AD and ADM, they do not want to deal with the fallout if there is an issue. I have the coaches pretty well trained. The AD posts signup lists two week before so I scan those and start with the calls. Time consuming, yes. But it gets better every year. No more fun, but better!

See, the problem is, the Coach won't give me the roster until the day before.

Sorry about the hijack!!!

As far as them sending kids to me before or after school, it really doesn't happen. I often DO stay late and work on my own homework after hours, so I am there. If a kid came in I would take care of it. Not resentful, because it rarely happens.
