Chemistry not required for nursing program?

Published

Hi guys!

I applied to a school and found out that chemistry is not a pre req for their nursing program and you don't have to take it at all. Is that normal?

I am attending a community college program and they do not require it as long as I took it in high school with a C or better, even though I graduated HS 14 years ago.

Some nursing programs require chemistry and others do not. I live in a large metropolitan area with many nursing programs, and at least one-third of the schools do not require chemistry at all. I've never taken a college-level chemistry course.

Just graduated nursing school... no chemistry for me, and I didn't take it in high school (even though that was almost 20 *gasp!* years ago).

(Community college)

All the nursing colleges in my area all require chemistry. All the schools I looked into require it as a pre-req to applying for the program for both the ADN and BSN programs (some take high school chemistry if taken within a certain time period of applying with a specific grade).

I had to take it. Ugh I hated balancing equations ! Min grade c .

I start my ADN program the 22, and no college l chemistry required as pre req, however I will need it once I do my bridge program to BSN .. :( not excited about that.

The community colleges I am taking pre reqs at does not require any sort of chemistry and they have an excellent program

Hi guys!

It depends on your program. However, take a close look at your course pre-requisites. While the nursing program may not require Chem as a pre-req, it might be a pre-req for other courses, such as Physiology, Microbiology or Pharmacology. Our program doesn't require it as a pre-req, but you can't take Physiology or Micro without having had Chem first.

Also, if you're going to pursue your BSN later, many of those programs require both Gen Chem and Organic Chem. You might want to take Chem now if you feel you'll pursue further education later. Talk with your academic advisor, just to make sure.

Good luck :D

All the schools in my state require Chem. I heard a rumor that they are going to require Chem 2 next. Lord help us all.

All I have to say is LUCKY!! I have it this semester and am not very excited about it:( Especially after I cruised on over to the nursing student forum a couple days ago and someone asked the worst class and almost all said Chemistry as their pre-req.

This is my last semester! I refuse to let Chemistry stop me from starting nursing school!
