Sep 3, 200718 yr Mandatory safe patient to nurse ratios (without cutting back on techs) everywhere.I'd go one further... mandatory ratios according to patient acuity, not patient census.
Sep 3, 200718 yr Cut out the 'customer service' phrase trend. Leave the phrase 'customer service' at Wal-Mart where it belongs.
Sep 3, 200718 yr Cut out all of the redundant charting!! Let us chart the 'meat and potatoes' of paperwork instead of typing the same thing 5 different ways in 5 different places so we can spend more time with the patients as it should be.I also second Emmanuel's & Tweety's recommendation regarding patient ratios.

Sep 3, 200718 yr Experts Lots of things ... but at the top of my list ...I would clarify, simplify, and reduce the number of educational degrees and pathways available for nursing education. Having so many different options that overlap with each other and sometimes even contradict each other is confusing to everybody. Policy makers, employers, the public, other disciplines, even nurses themselves are confused. We need to sort it out and then stick with it for a while so that we can move forward together.
Sep 3, 200718 yr I second what everyone else has said - And also: Strong nurse-managers and CNO's that advocate for nurses instead of trying to please the higher-ups and make themselves look good. An end to lipservice about Magnet Status.
