Mandatory safe patient to nurse ratios (without cutting back on techs) everywhere.

I'd go one further... mandatory ratios according to patient acuity, not patient census.

Cut out the 'customer service' phrase trend. Leave the phrase 'customer service' at Wal-Mart where it belongs.

Cut out all of the redundant charting!! Let us chart the 'meat and potatoes' of paperwork instead of typing the same thing 5 different ways in 5 different places so we can spend more time with the patients as it should be.
I also second Emmanuel's & Tweety's recommendation regarding patient ratios.

media portrayal, our administrations and our public, would respect us as competent professionals.
not as glorified hand-maidens.

In the UK,bring back in-house EN based training! There are so many young girls out there that would make excellent bed-side nurses but who just can't cope with academic university based training you are lucky in the US to have LPN's ,cherish them! I also agree with all the other posters, especially the constant, cover your butt paperwork and the "let's save money by not employing enough staff" mentality of companies just out to make a profit.

Less backbiting and more harmony. We will never truly be considered equals in the health care field until we learn to work together on a professional level, just as doctors, physical therapists, etc. do.

Lots of things ... but at the top of my list ...
I would clarify, simplify, and reduce the number of educational degrees and pathways available for nursing education. Having so many different options that overlap with each other and sometimes even contradict each other is confusing to everybody. Policy makers, employers, the public, other disciplines, even nurses themselves are confused. We need to sort it out and then stick with it for a while so that we can move forward together.
