I am a LTC nurse. I have worked at my facility for almost a year. I was hired third shift three nights a week. Six monts ago I began getting cancelled. It startedout being once a pay perriod, now it is up to three times or more a pay period and sometimes I go in and the facility has me down as an aid (which I don't mind from time to time). Is anyone else dealing with this. I am trying to buy a house and that's why I haven't quit. I am worried now because this facility has called me off so much since I began homebuying in august that my home loan may not go through because my income has shrunk so much.
Is this normal? I am feeling very discouraged from nursing at the moment. I went into this career thinking it was a viable option to provide for my family and something I could love since I can care for others.

Are you the only one being cancelled? Is census down? Where are you located - in the sunbelt, it is common to be cancelled when off season and the census is low?

oh wow... sorry this has happened.... around here(northern VA) LTC is busy almost always.... so I hope things look better for you. I do not work in LTC, but I have plenty of friends that do and I have not heard of this. & I had no idea that they can have you work as an aid when your an LPN.

I would just say broaden your horizons ... you may be able to add to your income working other places as well this place.

I've worked as an aide. My union contract specifies that I get paid at LPN rates.
They cancel almost everyone on third shift. Myself and one other nurse get cancelled the most. What I don't understand is that they are hiring on my shift left and right. In the past month I only got to work 10 of my 15 scheduled days, and four new nurses were hired for my shift.

You never know. Perhaps management is trying to send you an indirect, subliminal message regarding how much (or little) they value you as an employee.
I currently work at a LTC facility owned by a major corporation. When management secretly dislikes a particular employee but cannot fire him/her, they will cancel the person's shifts as an attempt to get the person to quit. Since many workers struggle to pay bills with anything less than a full paycheck, the employee often seeks other employment. Problem solved.
I do not know all of the details of your situation, but it makes no sense to hire nurses onto your shift when they are cancelling your shifts unless your DON, staffing coordinator, ADON, unit manager, supervisor, or administrator secretly wants you out of the picture.

The OP said she works nights and 3 shifts a week. She also said that the facility is hiring on her shift. That sounds to me like she is casual or PRN. They are going to hire folks that are full time and part time and cancel her so they can work. This is typical today.

Sounds like you are a prn employee not part time so whenever they are overstaffed or need to cut shifts you will be first. If they are hiring full time on your shift why not apply for a full time position, home ownership will need full time employment.Good luck hope everything works out.

I would just start looking elsewhere. Get a steady night shift case doing extended care home health and you will be set. If they offer you 40 hours a week then you can say good bye to this place. Also look at other LTC facilities for steady work. I agree that it is an anxiety-provoking situation not to be able to count on income to pay your mortgage.

First of all I wish someone had told me never to work in a LTC Facility or hospital (on staff) as they are very clickish, snarky places to work and always a popularity contest. I work in home health and I dominate where ever I work until I get all the days/hours. I am always signed up with no less than 4 hhc agencies and 2 staffing agencies. I never let anyone mess with my money. I must bring home 5-7 or I dont feel like I can shop like I want. At the first sign of dislike I jump ship to another place. When your expertise exceeds the needs of where you work they will need you more than you need them but then you also need to upgrade your education as well. Im going back to become an MD. If you are not in demand over the other nurses start asking management what you can better.
