  1. First of all congrats on passing, don't lose hope it's tough out there in all markets. I also got my first nursing home job by walking in during working hours just to drop off my resume and landed an on the spot interview. So be willing to do a little foot work the online application process will never beat hands on. But always be approiately dressed when dropping off resumes in person just in case the HR manager is available to see you. Good luck with your job search
  2. First of all congrats, not to be hard on you but consider yourself lucky with 23 residents don't stress we all started out feeling overwhelm but it's a learning process keep a little notebook handy ask questions make notes and relax. It takes time to develop your time management skills and to get into to flow of things no one expect you to have it all down in your first week.
  3. Okay take a deep breath now exhale it's all a rite of passage so to speak we all been through it been overwhelm and survived. Take it one day at a time don't attempt to do any caths, trache suctions, tube feedings, ect if you are not confident in your ability. Ask questions ask for more practice but in reality in LTC is that dark kept secret that school can never prepare you for. Depending on how you look at it each day will be a learning experience.Orientation is just a little shove to get you going down the road you will adopt your own rhythm so to speak to make things work better for you remember it's like this for everyone but it gets easier so don't stress. Good luck.
  4. Sorry to hear you feel disrespected but you seem to be working the wrong shift if you feel the need to have interaction with administration, like most of the previous post indicated. One of the reasons most of us love the night shift is not to have as much interaction with the suits, yes we handle a bit more responsibilities supervisors and nurses have to handle everything by themselves usually with less staff. The respect and recognition comes from the staff you work with whoever else you may interact with while on duty and most importantly the residents under your care. As far as in service we do in service for each shift during their time on duty do you get paid for coming in on your time off for in service. If you feel there is that need for having more of a work relationship with admin then night shift may not be the right choice, but if it's just about respect then just be confident in doing your best for the residents under your care at all times. At the end of the day their respect is the only one that really matters.
  5. As a new grad it is wise to get some experience before hiring on with agencies they usuall ask for at least 1 year.Be very mindful of the ones that will hire without experience. You are out there on your own think about how hard you worked for your license just a word for the wise congrats and good luck with the job hunt.
  6. In the facility in which I work this is considered a blessing and a curse because this responsibility falls on the nurses that the facility considers to be the strong nurse on the shift. So the blessing is that they appreciate the job that you do the curse is that with you being good at your job means you get additional responsibilities because of it or and we get no financial compensation for this. Just continue being the best at what you do and pass that on to someone else remember how tough it was for you in the beginning.Remember thin new nurse will never forget the first nurse he or she worked with make it a positive experience.
  7. Sounds like you are a prn employee not part time so whenever they are overstaffed or need to cut shifts you will be first. If they are hiring full time on your shift why not apply for a full time position, home ownership will need full time employment.Good luck hope everything works out.
  8. Good luck with your NCLEX-PN. As a newly licensed LPN working with an agency without experience could be very scary be mindful of any agency that will hire someone with no experience. Most reputable agencies ask for at least 1yr please don't risk losing your license get into a Nsg Home and get some experience first.
  9. Ref previous post they do have them in white
  10. You guys need to give these a try been wearing them for awhile, true fit and comfortable but only in black.Skechers work shoes Oswald-Balder
  11. Applications can be picked up at any of the locations. You can call and find out when they will be available MMALC 212 666 2116. Sorry the location will not be your choice but you could get lucky and go to MMALC.
  12. Your facility should have protocols in place for such procedures this will usually be a code blue and give your location.Usually part of the orientation process. Hope everything worked out well for the resident.
  13. Up here in NY that is not even an issue we are working everywhere. Of course the women still outnumber us.I'm in LTC and there are only four male nurses on staff full time in an eight unit facility.
  14. 2yrs in geriatric/ltc, recently started onsite chart reviews which is basically data collecting for Ins Co.
  15. Keep your head up it will get much easier as you get more acquainted with your unit.As your time management skills improve you will be able to figure out a system that makes your work day easier for you.Never stop putting the caring into your nursing duties. Good luck and I guess welcome back to LTC.
