Call-Back pay

If staffing is particularly poor- call back pay(time and half) is offered for that day. I did this on Sunday. On Wednesday, I was then on my sixth 8 hr day. We are payed over time for anything over 40 hours. Now, they are telling me I won't be paid OT for that Wed. because I got OT for that Sunday. You with me? I don't get it. What does one have to do with the other? Anyone have similar pay options?

Where I work, call-in pay is a 25% differential. Overtime is anything over 40 hours. I would have received the call in pay for the Sunday, and overtime for anything over the 40 hours. We have the specifics in our human resources policies -- which is on my hospital's website for employees and also in the human resources manual. When not paid for differentials, had management REFER to written policies & procedures.

You were doing your facility a FAVOR for coming in -- you deserved the additional call in pay. This is not the same thing as overtime. You should also be paid overtime for anything worked over 40 hours. Check with your human resources department. What may be written down may be different than what your supervisor has told you -- perhaps she is trying to balance the budget on the backs of employees -- not very ethical. Check it out. You are not a volunteer.

Call in pay is call in pay and independent of overtime, even if the rate happens to be the same. They offer call in pay at my workplace at the time and a half rate. Since they are usually offering it at 2:30 to work a double shift before I'm ready to go home from a particularly hellish day, I believe they need to make it double or triple time and refer to it as "kiss my butt" pay ;).

As SusanMary says, check your policy manual and squawk.

I don't believe that it's LEGAL to not pay overtime, if you're working over 40 hours. I'm not sure I understand your specific circumstances, but it sounds fishy to me. There has to be a wage and labor board in your state - I'd check with them!

I wholeheartedly agree with what the above posters said!

Check your contract. We are given OT for anything over 36 hours one week and 48 the next (we do 12 hour shifts). I don't see what call in pay has to do with it.

 What is it with employers now? Seems they want the nurses to give, give, give but they offer nothing in return...

My place of employment is the same way. Also, if you call in sick, but then work overtime on another unit, which gives you 40 hrs., you do not get 40 hrs. and the sick day, it's one or the other. Nice huh?:o

Just to let you know-I lost round one. HR said "we have fullfilled the ot requirement" by paying time and half on the extra day. I asked where I could find the policy and was told that there wasn't one specific to this. By asking this, I'm hoping it put a bug in their ear that I may be pursing this with the Labor Board, which I intend to do. Thanks for the address.

ah a nurse and her/ his employer... an abusive relationship in progress. this sh*t happens all of the time. and they wonder why you don't want to work extra. well, duh? i was shorted in my pay a few weeks ago. we'll give it to you w/ the next check. okay and i'll just come in saturday the 10th instead of saturday the 3rd. it suits me better, hmm. oh golly it's only a one sided thing! i can't do that? why not? well, gee they gave me my 16 hours of missing pay after i put up a fuss! i should manage my money better, my boss said if i need two days pay that badly. forget the fact that I EARNED THAT $ AND ITS PAYDAY AND THIS IS THE DAY I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PAID FOR THESE DAYS!!!
