Are you talking about College Algebra? Probably just any scientific calculator, but your instructor may require a specific model.

I had to use the TI 83-plus. I got it at Target for 99.99.
Yes, college algebra. My son needed some graphing calculator this year and it was $100!!! Just wondering if anybody knew if I needed the same.
UGH!!! That sounds like the graphing calculator. Guess I will get one this week with my 15% off bag from Office Depot.

Scientific is what we used in algebra, and again in Intro to Chemistry.
We didnt have to use the graphing calculator until Pre-calculus. Maybe your school is different :) Hopefully not, those monsters are expensive

Don't buy anything until the class starts. You never know what the instructor is going to want you to use and it'd be a pity to spend all that money. Plus, your son might not need his when you are in your class, so you could possibly share the one you already have.
I have no clue, as I didn't take any math except for Statistics in college...

For Basic Algebra, Beginning Algebra, Algebra I any calculator will work. The highest functions you will need will be to do square roots or take a square root. If you are going into Intermediate Algebra you will need a scientific calculator. You can find nice ones at just about any office supply or discount store for less than $20. You DO NOT need a graphing calculator unless you are told specifically that you do. They are generally used in Trig, Calculus and Finite Math. The TI-83 is a graphing calculator and runs upward to $100. It requires time to learn how to use it because it's functions are so complex. I use a TI-36X scientific calculator that I bought at Staples for about $17 and it served me quite nicely in doing logarithms and finding things like the 5th root of numbers for Intermediate Algebra which I took this past semester. (TI = Texas Instruments) Whatever you end up getting--save the instruction booklet! You may need it down the road.
Thanks for the info. I will just buy a scientific calculator and save the receipt so that if I need something different I can just return it. I have to use my 15% Office Max bag this week and class does not start until next Tuesday.

You may need a scientific one for chemistry also, so make sure you get one that can be used for your other classes :) I have a TI- 36 X and it was $40.
