Sorry, but, I think that's unprofessional.

I too think it is inappropriate..and I smoke. The thing is is we are supose to be representitives of health, so even though it is a way to gain trust and be friends with a patient...it is crossing the professional line...you get what I mean?
I keep my smoking secret, unless asked then I am truthful and point the the fact I am human and have habits to overcome too! But I have never gone down to smoke or accepted a smoke from a pt. Even though there were a few times that I felt a smoke with a patient would have been a very benifical talking time because they would be at ease and talking openly..and me too!
Nope...can't do it in the nurse/patient relationship...
HOWEVER..what you do outside of work is your business...but I would not make it a habit to have relations with any pt outside of the hospital (I am talking friendly or more..doesn't matter).

I can't believe your hospital isn't non-smoking. Mine is. In fact as of the first of the year, if an employee even smells like smoke they will be reprimanded. There is no place on hospital grounds to smoke (not even in your car!) The big whigs even have sent memos around saying we are to tell visitors not to smoke on hospital grounds. Don't think this will go over too well outside of ER!

Unfortunately, there are still hospitals that are not non-smoking campuses. Mine is one of them. It's a shame, really.

Here in Arkansas it is illegal to smoke on any hospital property. Patients must have an order and then they must be escorted off the edge of the property.
I am so glad that is one bad habit that I have not picked up! (I have enough others!! )

Smoking with the patient is a boundary violation for a number of reasons. One of them is that smoking is something you should confine to your break time. When you are escorting a patient, you are not on a break.

This is the policy in most US areas these days.
