I am a senior nursing student. I was SO dissapointed on the unit the other night when a group of RN's were talking loudly about "that new GN who made a HUGE med error" they explained details and talked about how disgusted they were. They gave enough details that me and my classmates could figure out who they were talking about(a girl that just graduated in may). We were so upset b/c this could be us in just a year. We were later discussing with our instructor and decieded that we don't care what your opinion is of us as a GN or an RN but please just keep your talk and opinions about our mistakes or short-comings to yourself. If you have some important feedback or support please confront us directly. I'm sure the GN did not want all of the students knowing about her mistake, I am sure she feels bad enough about it as it is. Just a reminder from a sensitive student....be careful what you say and how loud you say it.

Unfortunately, dear, it wasn't because she was a GN that it happened. Nurses can be very protective toward each other but we can also be vicious. If it had been a licensed nurse who made a huge med error the same thing could have happened.
But I hear what you're saying.

Why not direct this at the people you're actually annoyed at instead of ripping total strangers here a new one?

It is totally unprofessional to discuss such things at a nurses station! For goodness sake, the patient's family could overhear! Everyone makes mistakes, granted in health care the consequences are a little more steep than other professions, but why is it still the gut reaction of so many to want to trash the person who made the error? Do we forget where we came from? I'm sure no one would like to erase the mistake more than the new nurse who made the error, and I'm also sure that she/he would rather have the support of their coworkers than their disgust. I don't understand this way of thinking at all. We should ALL support each other and do what we can to help everyone be better at our profession.

Nurses can be very judgemental of each other in their mistakes when we should be supportive.
I agree, it's not appropriate to degrade a fellow nurse, least of all in a loud group.

But by the grace of God go I!!!
She wasn't "ripping total strangers a new one"! She was appalled at the behavior of the nurses she witnessed and was embarrassed for them and by them! No one is so rightous that they should totally degrade a new nurse or old, especially in a public forum. Why can't we bond together? Why can't we support each other? Does your wisdom make you so much better than everyone else? We need to suport each other, not bring each other down.
I asked a question to the OP.
The last two sentences of your post contradict themselves.
Done here.
It's strange how sometimes on these forums people can vent and get thier frustrations out and be supported and other times they can be made to feel foolish. I just need a place to vent and possibly hear other peoples opinions. I wanted to thank people for the supportive replies, I however dont think that anything i said could be considered "ripping you a new one". I am insulted. The reason that we can't direct this at the people who saod it is becuase we are students who are forced to work with these particular RN's for the remainder of the semester and prefer to stay on thier good sides so that they will continue to help us and support a learning environment.

Come on folks, play nice.
Seriously..........I should think that anyone with a halfway decent command of the English language SHOULD be able to discern between the personal use of 'you' (as in "I need to talk with you") and the more generalized form (as in "You gotta see it to believe it!"). No one is attacking anyone here......at least, not at the beginning of the thread.
Please, let's stop the sniping before yet another thread spins out of control. It's been happening way too often here lately, and it's just not necessary.
Thank you.
sorry...got frustrated:( ....thanks all for listening

nurses should be supportive of eachother the job is hard enough as it is.we don't need to swipe at eachother.the op was venting her frustrations.it was a discussion that should not have occured period but especially not in public at nurses station.we all have made mistakes in our careers as well as in life.students need to be supported also this is one of many reasons we have a nursing shortage.
