Background check question????

Hi! I am new to this site and desperately seeking an answer. I am a nursing major in Texas. I applied to the nursing program to hopefully begin in the fall of 2015. I have a few charges on my record from many years ago. A dwi and an assault charge that I was not convicted of and it was dropped. I sent in a petition to the board, went back and forth with them and finally got word I would be able to sit for the NCLEX in the future. Now another problem arises.....I've been waiting for my acceptance letter. I've spoken with my schools nursing department and they said I've been cleared by one clinical site and they're still waiting on clearance from the other one. Well, I still haven't heard anything from the nursing department about whether or not I'm accepted, but I got a letter from PreCheck (background check company) saying I have been denied for clinical rotations from one of the sites. Does this mean I am not in? Why wouldn't I have heard something from the school? So confused and heartbroken. Please help!!!

Sincerely,

Kara.

Was it a finger scan background check you had to provide? And do you think the reason that they coudn't clear you was because your record wasn't expunged?

Crossing my fingers for you!

Yes, they did take my finger prints. I was told by one of the ladies in the office they most likely denied me bc of the dwi. I'm not sure if I can get it expunged. I am going to contact a lawyer tomorrow. And thank you, cross fingers and toes!

Never give up. Even if you need to go to another school, even a BSN. Take the prerequisites and gen eds if you haven't already and keep not giving up, a door will open.

Kara, I fear you will not only struggle with this now, but also when it's time to apply for jobs. You really need to seek legal council to see if things not convicted can be sealed. This is a LOT of work to do, only to not get hired.

Even a BSN? I'm curious what you mean by that.

She only wrote about 2 ADN schools as the possibilities so I thought she only wanted that..some people think maybe the BSN is too long. She wrote how disappointed she is and having to change to a 4 yr school vs 2 might feel like a disappointment for her too. (I don't feel that way since I'm in a BSN program btw)

On top of this website under Career heading then subcategory Nursing Licensure With A Criminal History. There's 50 pages of threads that may help give you advice.

There was some post a while back regarding an individual who is now a nurse with a previous conviction of murder as a teen.

I don't know, but I am guessing DWI is a lesser offence than murder. You should have some hope of a positive solution.

Good luck. Suggest changing or removing avatar photo. Not sure if default.

Thread moved for the best response from others with similar issues.

Here's another thought. Forego the ADN program and go for BSN. I don't know where you live, but as an example, I'm near Phila. Pa. If you were to be accepted at Jefferson or University of Penna. for the nursing program, you would do your clinicals at same hospital. So you would be either accepted or rejected and not have to wait until all sites approve you. In other words, try a teaching hospital.
