Arrival in US -- what to expect, what to do

Now that many of you that were affected by the retrogression have now received green cards and will be arriving in the US soon, I think that we should now have a thread focusing on that. As well as for all of the others from different countries.

Where to go to purchase initial items that will be needed. What to expect the first weeks of being a new resident in the US, etc. Many of us have are special places to find things.

If you are in NY, they have taxes for the federal government, the state, as well as city. The amount of taxes will also depend on the amount of deductions that you have, do you have any children, etc. Expenses for working such as licensure, stethescope, scrubs or uniforms, etc. Costs that you have to pay for are deductible. Figure on a 1/3 going for taxes...........

Hi. What about NJ area? I mean, would it also be 1/3 in taxes? Is that after all deductions, plus taxes paid on purchases? Or is it only 1/3 in deductions from your salary?

That is the basic rate, just an off the wall number, it will depend on which city that you live in, not all have city taxes, etc.

Our taxes on purchases are much less than most other countries. I definitely would not focus on the rate of taxes, your salaries are higher in those areas to begin with. You have many deductions that can take away some of that tax base. That should be the furthest thing from your mind right now.

Many hospitals in Phoenix has programs in place with child-care facilities near them for a significant discount. For there, I would see what the hospital offers first.

Many of the supermarkets in your area will have a membership card that you can get for free, it gives you discounts on foods, meats, etc. The store will offer weekly sales, and if it is on an item that you use, the savings can really add up just be having the card.

The large warehouse type markets, such as Sam's Club and Costco, still require that you purchase a yearly membership.

Target now has a food section at all of their stores, can get most things there if you are in a hurry, they just don't carry eggs, but about everything else. Great for picking up milk, they are open until 10 pm every night.

Another thing is purchasing an Entertainment Book for your area. It is a book that is offered for sale for about $30 to $35 depending on location. It offers 2 for 1 coupons for restaurants in the area, dry cleaners, car washes, etc. Also a good way to find out what is in your area, plus if you like to travel, they have great discounts on hotels all over the US. Actually all over the world. Most of the hotels are 50% off or even more.

Hey PPL ! two years ago I was also a new immigrant. Now I feel more like at home. I am still an international student. The big advice I can give, don ever be shy or afraid. Just keep asking questions. Try to work on your English, this will increase confidence (but don judge mine :)). Be carefull with bank cards, as they have overdraft fees and etc. In college or university don't always listen to your advisor as they try to give you unecessary classes. Try to get the classes required for your major and the ones which worth credit not equated or sth like that. hmmmmm, what else, just ask lots of questions in every single question u have. If you wait a little while to get the Entertainment book, you can even get it for $20.00. The band at my local school is selling them for $25.00 right now. Well worth the cost for me, as I travel alot and one stay in a hotel pays for the book.

He would normally only be called to join if he becomes a citizen. The chances of him being called as a permanent resident are highly unlikely, as he still is a citizen of another country.

Then your book was $25 in your area, depends on what the cost is. They do vary between city to city. I bought mine for $30, which was $5 of off the rate in my area as I got it at the hospital. The highest rate is actually $40 per book.

They offer a $5 discount when you purchase it thru a fund-raising organization.

I have been using them sine they were first published and that was many, mant years ago............to many to count.

Later on in the season, you may be able to find one at Sam's Club or Costco for even cheaper.
