Reconsider going expensive...

I always go cheap with work watches, like $9.97 at Wal-mart cheap. Then when it gets dirty and nasty from gathering funk and such at work I don't mind throwing it away. They usually last at least a year before I thow them out. I buy the watches with the plastic bands because I feel like I can wash them with soap or wipe them with antibacterial wipes. All you really need the watch to do is tell time and count seconds. I save the nice watches for outside work.

My watch is a timex. It is waterproof, has a second hand and lights up q15 seconds when you push the button. Is great for taking pulse in the dark. I work in LTC and sometimes need to take pulse when resident sleeping. Don't have to wake resident by turning on the lights. You can order it from most nursing uniform magazines. I actually bought mine at wal-mart.

I usually tend to spend a nice amount of money because I want something that I can rely on.

Any recommendations as far as a good solid watch for a nurse?

WalMart cheapos are the way to go. They are disposable if you need them to be. Now the features that I look for: #1 cheap; #2 flat crystal; #3 second hand; #4 glow in the dark and/or lighted (i work noc shift)

I'll third the cheap unless you have some kind of allergy issue as far as metal on the watch itself goes. Also your watch tends to get bumped and banged around alot. I dont know how many I have physically broken. Course most of those happened when I still worked as a paramedic several years ago.

I have though see some nice watches being worn. Most the nurses that do though say they wash them in the kitchen sink- ie they are waterresistant to some extent.

I like the Tag Heuer 2000 series watches as well as the Oakley D1 watches.

I like the pin on your chest type watch. Don't buy an expensive one. I pick mine up at those watch stalls in malls ($10 and you get a spare battery). The only one that ever let me down was the one I forgot to take off (didn't make it through the washing machine).

A friend got an expensive nurses watch from her parents as a gift. Broke the crystal the first time she wore it to clinicals (hit it on a bedrail). She also swears by cheapies!

Away from work its Seiko.

My husband bought me a G-Shock watch for Christmas 2 years ago and I love it. It's solar powered, hooked into the atomic clock in Colorado so the time is always right, and it's practically indestructible. Instead of metal or fabric it has a resin band, so it doesn't hold onto yucky stuff I pick up at work.

Yay! I'm not the only one wearing the cheap watches. I buy them in pairs, leave one in the locker, the other on my wrist to be destroyed by washing my hands a ZILLION times! I've killed two lovely timepieces in two years. My cheapie? Still going after a year and a half. Walmart special at 5.99

Tag hauer sounds nice, but the g-shock sounds more reasonable.
