I was reading about slalries of the sport figures in America. it said that the new soccer recruit from England, David Beckman's yearly salary would pay for 842 RN's??? WOW!!!!! What do you think of that? Put them at the bedside and save some lives!!!! This is incredible to me.
I was wondering what you all thought??? Or put teachers in the classrooms, etc, etc. I like sports, but Wow, where have our priorities gone????

That's an illogical argument. Now if hospitals were paying his salary, there'd be cause for concern...

I do think that it is a pathetic world we live in when athletes, actors, etc. make such ridiculous salaries while those that teach others how to do a job and people that save people's lives can barely scrape by sometimes.
Supply and demand.
There are plenty of people who can learn to be a teacher. Not many people can play sports at a professional level. Also consider their careers can end abruptly on any given day, and even if they make it through without injury, they "retire" at a much earlier age than us mere mortals.

Hearing the phrase "supply and demand" from someone whose title says "evil liberal" in it is amusing...what do they call it? Oh yes, irony
In any case, speaking of supply and demand...the word "need" comes to mind. I find that society needs public servants more than celebs...be they athlete or whatever. And make no mistake, there is no shortage of people who could fill athlete's shoes.
And yes, their careers can end abruptly this is true, but this really doesn't happen that often...not before millions of dollars are made. They really should have a backup plan anyhow...perhaps one that involves an education like the other professions you mention.
Now hey...don't get me wrong. I'm all for them making a very decent salary. Especially when you see how various sports figures of the past have had to suffer after years of abusing their bodies. But on the other hand, we shouldn't be on the other extreme throwing obscene money at them either.
But what EVERYONE in this thread needs to relise about the "supply and demand" argument is that while it doesn't apply to the profession itself...it does apply to us as a society. WE make the choice to buy those tickets and products, and so we encourage these inflated payrolls. These althetes wouldn't make so much if the winning teams and their sponsers didn't have so much to make off of them.
So don't point your fingers at Beckham or any other overpaid athlete...it's your society that is doing this...the same society that worships starbucks and the 25% off rack.
Look at how many people watch the Super Bowl, that right there is a hell of a lot of demand!
People watch it, people buy it, people worship it ...... therefore it's paid big bucks.
And make no mistake, there is no shortage of people who could fill athlete's shoes.
But on the other hand, we shouldn't be on the other extreme throwing obscene money at them either.
Hey! I read that Bill Gates' home is worth $125 million. Just think how many nurses that would pay for!!!

the money these athletes generate for thier "employers" are a lot more than their salary. Thats why they are paid so much.

Really? I don't think so :)
Fair enough, but subjective
Then don't. Demand goes down, then so does their value--- and their salary follows.
That was my point. But again, not their value as an athlete, but a value that society places on them. They only 'deserve' such pay because we decide to make it so. This is acheived through people such as you who feel they earn their pay, and those who support such situations by buying goods and attending these events.
Of course it applies to the profession.
Who's pointing fingers?
The people bashing Beckham and other overpaid athletes.
Ultimately it really is a huge non-issue. If people have a problem with these athletes and their pay then they should avoid sports and sports products...as to not contribute to the "problem." If you don't want to do that, then simply get past it.
The idea that what they make is worth a certain number of other professions is a fallacy at best, anyway. Imagine a situation where David Beckham did not exist. Does anyone actually believe that money would go to hiring nurses? If he took a pay cut would that magically create nurses or something?

Main reason I don't watch sports or much TV.
I watch the antique Road Show .
Talk about putting high prices on junk. Babe Ruth's signature only goes higher.
