My first IV in the clinical setting was a prior nurse educator who also worked on one state's NCLEX boards. Oh and she had also travelled to various parts of the world for nursing conventions and to listen to theorists. I will never, ever forget that moment in my life...talk about nerves shaking YOUR whole body. I got it on the first stick-thank God (really did thank him when I get the flash of blood) and everything went rather well but it had to have been the most nerve racking thing EVER! But congrats-isn't it great what can excite you?
Horrors!!!

i've been a RN for about 2 yrs now....nothing beats the feeling when you get one in someone that others have gone.."oh, I couldn't see a vein anywhere...."...I always do a little dance when I get one(in my head, not in front of a patient.)
Hahaha my boyfriend is terrified of needles! It would never fly...Congrats!
My boyfriend has tattoos and piercings, so he's not afraid of needles, but he already informed me that I will NOT be practicing I.V. insertion on him. He's just no fun at all...

Congrats! I start nursing school in August and one of the things I am freaked out by the most is IV insertion. During CNA clinicals, I went with a nurse to watch her put one in to be sure I wasn't going to faint or anything crazy. The nurse was an LPN and was only just learning how to do IV's and she had trouble hitting the vein. She ended up sticking the entire needle into the woman's vein and still didn't hit it. I felt a tad queasy then but the idea of working a needle around inside someone's arm sort of freaks me out.
I have been very apprehensive about the whole needle thing but from reading other posts on this website, I have discovered that I am not alone in this!

Congrats! It's such a great feeling and you will remember that first successful IV start forever! I will be learning how to start them on babies next week. I am really scared.

In my NS they didn't let us practice IVs on pts, they just explained the theory and said we would learn on the job. You are way ahead of the game Aero! Congrats!
