It is also a professional forum. There is a certain expectation inherent in the fact that most people here have degrees and ought to be able to write in a cogent manner.

Of course it's your choice as to how you write in your posts, but that doesn't somehow negate the fact that it reflects on how people perceive you here.

A lot of people dont have a degree just yet. Yes it is a professional form but you guys are making a big deal out of nothing . If you need me to clarify something just ask. Stop going back and fourth with me about grammar if i know how to write. I know this a big deal in nursing, and i will write properly, dont't worry. And a lot of people have degrees and still dont know how to write.

Okay. Bad grammar has been addressed! I understood what the OP was saying even though grammar and mechanics were off. It's amazing how many people on AN act like the grammar police or let alone online bullies! Have some respect people. Simply say, "I am having trouble understanding your question. Do you mind rephrasing it?" Exactly...this is an online forum and you do not know the people you are responding to in these threads! You don't know if the person writing has a learning disability, speaks a foreign language, has autism, or etc. If you can't find the nerve to be polite then find another thread that you CAN understand.

Bottom line, grades are not always an accurate reflection of how well one applies what one learns in school to one's nursing practice. There is obviously a certain percentage to be attained in order to pass nursing school, but application, content comprehension and nursing practice are three very separate entities.

Agreed. Sometimes grades are not accurate. Grades depend on a number of factors: professor's teaching style, study habits, and opportunities for material to be applied and reinforced.

I agree with you.

A lot of the hospitals here are starting to look at grades as one of the factors in the new RNs that they hire. ie. expecting applicants to submit school transcripts. Probably as a way to weed out the masses. My hospital gets something like 40 applicants per position and upwards of 100 applicants per "desired" position. (SICU, NICU, Mother/Baby, etc.)

Not that I believe that good grades equal a good nurse. But if it's an easier path to finding a new grad job -- then it's something that has to be done.

No source--it's purely anecdotal, as is the OP's assertion in the original post.

I'd be very curious to see a study done on the topic, however, given the number of times I've seen excellent nurses who were not at the top of their class in school.
