Where are the RN transition training programs?

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a nurse training program (preferably in AZ or CA) where the facility trains the experienced nurse in a new field?

I'm interested in working in L&D and am very interested in going through a hospital training program. I've done a lot of research online on this subject and have come to a dead end. Most all of the programs out there offer this type of program to new grad nurses only.

Thanks for your help in advance.

It is very likely that if you were offered a job on L&D you would be given an extensive orientation. My daughter transferred to L&D after completing her new grad orientation on Med/Surg. She worked with a preceptor for at least a month.

Thank you but it's very unlikely that a hospital will hire me on to an L&D unit with my type of experience especially since I'm no longer a new grad.

Other than refresher programs (which have winnowed down in my area) I've only seen one kind of thing like this, a perioperative nursing certificate program at one of the big Boston colleges, and even that's gone the way of the Dodo bird.

I honestly think the kind of thing you're looking for doesn't exist...

Agreed.

Even if you were to find and be able to complete some kind of course, you're still going to get the orientation to the unit. We have had some new hires go out on their own before we hired them and complete the perioperative course mentioned above. We still put them through our own perioperative course because they don't actually have OR experience and we can't verify their competency.

The only specialty nursing programs I've ever seen other than perioperative electives are the advanced practice programs.

Instead, find out from recruiters what you can do to make yourself a more competitive applicant. Is it applying to a different department within the same facility, establishing a relationship with them, and later applying for an internal transfer position? Is it going back to school and obtaining a BSN if you don't already have one? Is part of why you aren't being offered a lack of interview skills? There are ways to work around obstacles; depending on what the obstacle is it may just take time.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles has a RN transition program. I just got accepted and the program starts Feb 2020 ?

Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles and Sharp Chula Vista in the San Diego area both had recent listings of transition programs for experienced nurses interested in L&D.

Oh nice! I'll look into it, thank you!

I agree with @Katie82. Pretty much any highly specialized unit will train you as though you're a new grad.

I wouldn't limit yourself to just programs that specifically claim to have a 'new to specialty' program. I'd just apply to any L&D jobs that you see posted with the expectation that they'll train you appropriately.

Parkland Hospital in Dallas has fellowship programs for experienced nurses looking to change specialties, including NICU, ICU, ER and L&D. They just hired quite a few from outside the hospital and the fellowship starts in a few weeks.

As you can imagine, landing one of those spots is super competitive, but they get a full residency experience.
