When will you remove your fake nails?

I noticed nurses have no nails on at all, so it is what's best for the patient.

I have officially been walking around with ugly hands (and a gorgeous wedding ring) for almost a month now. I pass by the nail shops and tear up from time to time, but I keep my eye on the prize.

I think you'll have a nice advantage going into your adn program... cause you will have JUST finished micro! that's a good thing when you're learning pharm!

I am from Norway and we usually are allowed to use makeup (descreed), but am I uderstanding you wrights;

when you are talking about false nails in the clinics, and coloring them are you really allowed to use that in pt.clinics?

We are not allowed to use perfume, we have to use the uniform (never privat; exept privat cosmetic clinics etc) at the hospital, never privat scrubs, everything would be washed by the hospital and so on.

But FALSE NAILS? Is it true?

Wonderful!! A support group for nurses who removed their fake nails! It killed me to do it, but I had to. I wore them for years and I get withdrawal symptoms everytime I see someone with them. You know, I appreciate the reason why we shouldn't wear them, but when are they gonna crack down on the gazillion health care workers who don't wash their hands between patients, or wear gloves when drawing blood or starting IV's? And it's discriminatory--only aimed at females. Yes, I'm whining. Nursing is the only thing I know how to do, and basically, I love it. But I've been a nurse for ten years. You give up holidays and weekends with your families, you give up sleep due to working shifts. You get pooped on, urinated on, physically and verbally abused. Everytime the hospital's in a financial bind it's nursing's fault because of our salaries. You end your career with a bad back, weak bladder and varicose veins. If I ever can find a niche in nursing management that I'm happy with--the nails go back on!

I just removed my nails AGAIN!!! I had them put back on during the semester break, I am too am going thru withdraw. :chuckle

AAGGHH.....I don't want them off...I won't do it....I won't I won't I won't....

Ok, now that my hissy fit is over..

I was going to remove mine...I'm not sure of my schools policy as of yet and now that I'm getting married in October I don't want to take them off and put them back on and take them off again.

I guess whether or not I get into the program in fall will dictate what I do. I feel for you ladies...I know when I have broken a nail (the last broken one was Sept 11, 2001...go firgure) it just freaks me out...I can't touch anything, I hate the way it feels...ugh:rolleyes:

It takes a real long time for nails to feel "normal" again after removing acrylics. If you have soft nails to begin with, they will really hurt when you take them off. Get it done the right way though, don't try to pick them off, they have to soak in acetone. I am holding on to mine as long as I can get away with it.

I worked the other night with an RN who didn't take her nails off. She had them done as a French manicure and fairly short. I was jealous. I asked her about it. She shrugged and said, "I work nights, who sees them? When someone actually threatens to fire me if I don't remove them I will. I doubt that will happen." I admire her chutzpah. And I'm still jealous of her nails.

Wow...now there is a nurse who is all for safe patient care!! I so want her to take care of me if I am in the hospital with a wound of some sort!!

I don't know about other places, but hospitals in the KC area have adopted a city-wide policy banning nursing staff from wearing acrylic nails. I've seen girls come in with "claws of death" only to be sent home and not return until the nails have been removed. I think it will be a matter of time until state laws are going to start coming down with artificial nail bans on nurses.

Instead of spending money for fake nails, why not spend the money on pedicures instead? After spending gobs of hours on your feet, what better excuse does one need to have their feet rubbed and pampered??
