What would you do for five weeks

Published

I realize that there are many post aking what to do to prepare for NS. However, I start NS on Aug. 29 and this summer I am currently taking two classes: Micro and Human Growth. I started my prereqs in the fall of 09 and this is my second summer taking summer class and to be honest, I need a break. I have 4 children and my husband works 70 hours a week. So taking care of the kids and the house all falls onto me, which I am not complaining because my husband knows I can only do so much! With that said, my Final is July 18th and then I will get about a five week break. So what would you do in those five short weeks? I do want to practice a little dosage calculations though because I am terrified of math!

Then get more comfortable with the math... but then...just relax!

You won't get to for a long time.

I got 10 days off between my pre-requs (been going straight through) and my accelerated BSN program which starts (gulp!) on Monday. We took a vacation. I tried to read a little. I've been attempting to enjoy spending time with my kids without thinking "I should be studying/reading a text/writing a paper!" I got all of my books, printed out the syllabus for my fist class. Tonight I'm enjoying wasting time on the internet! I would suggest relaxing and being very mindful of the time you have, especially with your kids. Our programs will only be so long, but any amount of time in their young lives is significant. I know I won't be able to be as present with them during my program, so I'm trying to enjoy focusing on them/me for a few more hours!

The math isn't bad... You are ordered 1g of tylenol for your pt; you have 500mg tablets available. How many tabs do you give?

Drug is ordered at 4.7mcg/kg/day. Your pt is a 105 lb child. How much medicine should the child receive in one day?

So, don't stress too much about math, just make sure you can do basic conversions. Multiply by 2.2 to get pounds from kg, divide by 2.2 to get kg from pounds. Grams to micrograms, etc.

Use your 5 weeks to relax (as much as possible with kids and a house), spend some quality time with your family, and get any books, supplies, and uniforms you need for school

Good luck!

Totally agree with the previous advice. Relax and enjoy your time off because you will be too busy to spend time with your kids later.

Spend the time with your hubby and children! Once you start school there is a chance they will see you less.

I wouldn't do a darn thing except enjoy my five weeks, hang with my kids, and get in as much relaxation as I could!

Best of luck!!

I'd stock my freezer with homemade frozen meals: breakfast burritos, lasagnas, enchiladas... etc.

AND...enjoy the time with my family as much as possible.

join my friends and I in a mini-vaca to the beach?! I have been doing pre-reqs every semester (summers included) also since spring '09. My friends are forcing a long weekend away. Between second orientation and 29 August when I start also, and they are inspecting my bags for appropriate vacation books.

I would say do nothing or take a vacation and relax. But with 4 kids and a busy husband... that's different. You may want to headstart or spend the last free times with the family. Once nursing school starts, it will be so hard to spend time with kids and husband.

Agreed. Something else you can "study" is the insides of both eyelids.:p Enjoy yourself and best to you!!:nurse:

Relax and enjoy. Just chiming in. I finished my first year and am so thankful to have the summer off to just chill. I s'pose I could read ahead - I think they'll be putting up a reading list as we get closer to fall term starting but I won't get ramped up until the week before. Enjoy the time with your kids when your patience is still intact. Get a couple of romantic nights in with the DH. That's the best way to prepare.
