What are my chances??

so i have applied to my local community college for the ADN program. i have completed all requirements (pre reqs, entrance exam, immunizations, etc.). i have just been informed that i am ranked as alternate # 2. i know what this means, i know how the ranking works, but what are my chances of being accepted? it's so nerve wrecking. they said i'd be informed no later than the 17th. i want it so badly. this time last year i had a 1.9 gpa (i obviously majored in partying when i began college) and have raised it now to a 3.1. will i be accepted? how many alternates are usually accepted?

Alternates get into the program if one of the accepted candidates declines their spot. They may have been accepted to more than one school or change their mind about attending nursing school or be unable to meet the financial requirements. Your GPA doesn't matter now, because you've already been given the #2 alternate position. Which means that two people have to decline their acceptance in order for you to get a spot.

However, there is really no way to say what % likelihood you have of getting in. How many people are accepted into the program? The more people that are accepted, the better your chance that two people will decline their acceptance and you'll get it.

thanks for replying. i'm not sure the exact number that they accepted. they said anywhere from 30-50. it's just so nerve wrecking. i'm tempted to call but when i did a couple of weeks ago they asked me to be patient! lol. guess i'll just prepare in the event that i'm not accepted.

I wonder if alternate #1 has been called yet? I wouldn't give up hope! People give up their spots up until the day before. They might be someone in your class who gets called off the alternate list for another program, and there's your spot! :)

I have had to turn down acceptance letters to the three schools I was accepted into: a BSN program and two community colleges. So it is possible for an alternate to make it in. It's weird I kind of feel good about not going and letting someone else take the spot since I know I'll get into another school next year.

I was the #2 alternate and I got it a week after acceptance letters were mailed out! Remember even if someone drops out the first few weeks of school you could still get in even tha late!

Unfortunately, in my program if you drop out anytime after the first DAY of school they don't fill your spot with an alternate, because of the inability to make up clinical and or lab hours that are required. Seems like such a waste to me, but state licensing required X-number of hours.

What will be, will be. There is nothing that you can do about it now, except sit back and wait. If you don't get in this semester, it is disappointing, but not the end of the world - you can try again. Spend the extra semester maybe retaking the entrance exam, or retake your lowest Pre-req class to make yourself more competitive (of course if your program allows). Good news is, that you are on the bubble and so close to getting in, that it will happen for your eventually. Keep us posted. Good luck

SlaveHeart, why did you turn down three spots and NOT go to another school? If you're shooting for only one school and not taking the alternatives, why not just apply to the one?

I was originally from California before I got accepted into the nursing program. I applied about 10 different schools in California and other states. My grade was 3.8 and was still having such a difficult time entering the program. I was rejected so many times not because of my grade but because the program is compacted. I'm sure you have experienced by now that majority of the schools especially community colleges are lottery programs. I was desperate getting in the program that my plan C was to even apply out of country. Fortunately I finally got accepted in Nevada and graduated in the beginning of 2008. I guess my advise to you is that apply to as many schools as you can and don't give up. You have to have plan B or C. Research other schools and maybe consider private schools or out of state. thanks everyone for your responses! and guess what.. this morning i received a call... I'M IN!!!! i am so excited and nervous! classes start in just two weeks and i still have to find a replacement at work! im gonna bust my butt for the next two years! good luck to you all!

Congrats! I was never told I was an alternate but I was initially denied admission to my program but a spot opened up when other candidates declined admission so I got in! I start school in less than 3 weeks.
