Have any of you ever seen swollen lips/sore tongue (feels like I burned it) from Bactrim or Cipro? They are not listed as SE's in my drug guide but I woke up this a.m. looking like I got collagen injections in my lips! I took the last Bactrim 800/160mg on late Thursday, took 1 Cipro 500mg last night (the Bactrim didn't work for my UTI).
Now I'm wondering if I should keep taking it or what? I really want to get rid of this UTI but this seems freaky. I rarely take any drugs (except Synthroid qd)... I probably haven't had an abx in 10 years and I haven't ever used these. It's the weekend and I got the script from a clinic so there's really no one to call.
Dh says I look good but to quit taking the $%it. Anyone have any thoughts?

Yes, I have heard of this happening -- to a neighbor. She went into anaphylatic (sp?) shock and was hospitalized for 2 weeks. Please call your dr or pharmacy re this and see about d/c the drugs.[/QUOTIt sounds like you are allergic to one of the medications, do not take them again until you see a MD. to continue taking this medication if you are allergic to it will increase the reaction each time with the possibilty of your throat swelling. you should go take 2 benydral and call your MD or who is ever covering, or depending if your having resp. issues togo your local hosp to be seen

Probably not the best idea to take them. Sounds to me like you're working your way up the ladder to a full-blown allergic reaction...and the associated admission!
Thanks, I did call the pharmacy and she said to d/c it. I can't call the NP b/c she is at my university clinic and they don't take call (there's just an answering machine so I'll have to call on Monday). I thought about my airway in the middle of the night last night when I realized my lips felt weird, but it seems ok - sort of maybe a little like a postnasal drip feeling but that's it - I can't tell if that's part of the tongue thing or throat thing or what. I think I'm going go search for some Benedryl anyway.
Another thing that I realized after I wrote my post, when I drank something sweet. My sense of taste is all messed up or exaggerated. I drank a sip of Propel (sweet drink) and I could taste the sweet just at the tip of my tongue but I mostly tasted SOUR/BITTER! I hope this is temporary and will go away.
Weird o rama, huh?

Yeppers...I said EEK! Tongue and lips are classic of potential airway swelling r/t allergic hypersensitivity reaction (anaphylaxis). Do not take this med anymore and consult your MD right away! Remember these and let ALL your physicians know you are allergic to these (specilists, dentists!!!, all of them!).
Next time you take this med..you may not have time to type your reactions!!!
Drink cranberry juice like it was going out of style, clean very very well after going to the bathroom, wear cotton underwear, increase fluids too. If you can't stand cranberry juice (I simply got use to it..I have to have it served on crushed ice..only way I can drink it)..they have cranberry gel caps at healthfood stores, or even some grocery stores in the vitamin isle (I have now started seeing them in home UTI tests now...like a bottle of 30 or so in each test kit...but I don't trust home UTI tests...they don't seem very accurate!!!).
IT is not really known with 100% accuracy what it is in cranberries that helps UTI's, some say the alkaline content...but still...it works! I drink a glass a day when I work cause I don't get to the bathroom between patients as much as I need to some days! Big risk for UTI's in nurses because of that! I just started making it a habit and so far 5 years and no UTI! :)

stop taking it!!!!!!!!!! could be signs of allergic reaction - could be your throat next- :uhoh21:
Thanks... I was being really good about the cranberry juice last week but I slacked off, need to get on it again.
I am still fairly miserable. My freaking lips are still swollen and my tongue is so sore I don't even want to eat (plus everything is tasteless or bitter, my taste buds are all messed up). The mucosa inside my mouth really isn't right either. I was hoping it would improve after I took Benadryl yesterday, but it didn't. I can't take any more b/c it makes me too sleepy and I'm home with my three little boys (dh is at work). Now I'm thinking steroid but I don't think we have any 24/7 walk-in clinics here and I'm not going to the ER (either way I'd have to take the boys too... further joy).
I am obviously super glad that the reaction wasn't any worse but I just want to be well (I still have the UTI and a lovely accompanying yeast infection from the abx)!!!!!!!!

Good point ERNurse752.
My sister is deathly allergic to sulfa drugs and it started like you describe...if you ever take another dose of this class of meds you may go immediately into full bown anaphylaxis (MY SIS DID)
Hope you get on the right meds for your UTI and yeast FAST and begin to feel better soon. I know from experience how miserable this feels. (((HUGS)))
