  1. Thanks anyway, not enough money in it for a lawyer and where I am is not where I live--- there is another agency putting nurses in the prison -my contract sez I can't do that --going home at earliest opportunity. I hope I can make enough to ship my car,
  2. I have a story to tell but mainly I need advice. I am am LPN in Hawaii and Colorado and LVN in California. I live in Hawaii. Last November I was approached by an agency - to take a 3 month contract in Corcoran SATF. Since I like correctional nursing and was not getting much work in Hawaii I took the contract. The contract clearly states that it is a 40 or more hour week but I have only had about 24 hours a week. The living stipend (they don't give apartment) is decreased for each hour less than forty. Even counting the stipend my earnings are only what they were last time I worked non travel. Since the contract says 40 hours and the facility does not work me 40 hours I call every day someties more than once- I said I would work any yard, any shift- I think that the registry is violating the contract. I am staying in a motel here and my dog is in a kennel so my expenses are high. I tried to contact the labor commisisson about this and was told that they don't enforce contracts. I want to go home, but I need the money I was to earn in the last month to finance that (I have to ship my jeep-was stored in CA) Who do I contact to enforce this contract? Or do I?
  3. i would quit so fast your head would spin, hire a part time housekeeper and buy the equipment for my ceramic work, and other arts and never look at a hospital or ltc facility in my life. but i would keep my license and do some part time volunteer work in low income clinics:paw: janet josh lvn (student for bsn)
  4. Boy do I feel dumb- I re-read and found that the other half of pay while orienting gets paid after working 80 regular hours:icon_roll
  5. I was happy to see others with the same issue I have.I am 54. I got my LVN in 1981 but was out of nursing for 10 years and just came back but I am working on BSN on the internet and was a bit concerned about investing that much in education at my age. I hope it is worth it.
  6. i am an lvn. i was off work for several years due to injuries incurred in an auto accident, went back to work in 2005 at the county jail in redding and really felt good with it. then after about 6 months i had another back surgery asnd had to leave-finally i have a doctors release to go to work. while i was off this last year and 1/2 i moved here to carmichael and i like it here. after posting my resume i was contacted by several agencies and am very interested in one but i'm not sure. has anyone experienced working for solvere? when she sent the contract i was surprised to find that although the job pays $32.50 (no benefits) the contract not only doesn't say that it also states that i will do orientation for $15.00 per hour. is this normal? the other concern i have about the offer is that it states that i am to sign only with the one registry. if i have this job i won't need another because it is full time with plenty of overtime but for my own sense of security i have always had more than one registry. this is not a real problem but it irks a little. i'm sure she will back off on this one. i'm more concerned with the orientation of less than half wages then anything. not only does it state this but it states"if there is orientation but does not give an number of days or hours. this is a position at the prison close to my house and i have interviewed twice to do the same thing for the state and been told to keep on trying, so if i go there and they want me i can hire to the state after i work a certain number of hours. it is so great having this forum to get some information -and opinions
  7. thank you for your advice and i followed it.i guess they changed. i sent the following to their job site since there were no mta listings. i would like to know if you use mta's anymore. i have wanted to do that for several years and now am available. i have been an lvn/lpn since 1980, have a background in both mental health(locked unit) and county jail nursing and am bilingual spanish/english thank you, i received the following : good afternoon, we no longer employ an mta classification, however some mtas have also qualified for our clinical social worker positions. we also employ lvns. if you are interested in an lvn position, please contact the plata (medical) recruitment unit at 1.877.793.4473 or [email protected]. you can also access the online examination at: http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/career_opportunities/hr/ops/exams/exams_medical/index.html if you are interested in any of our mental health postitions, you can obtain job descriptions and applications from our website as well: http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/career_opportunities/hr/ops/exams/exams_mental/index.html robyn j. lee field recruitment unit, office of workforce planning california department of corrections and rehabilitation 1.888.232.4584 [email protected] http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/career_opportunities/index.html i think they stopped last summer. unless i am missing something?
  8. Just re-read TIRZO13's post - I was invited to interview at Salinas, they were hiring for LVN, not MTA---I would have loved to go for MTA
  9. They are not using LVN-cop anymore (7000 mo) now it is just LVN at between 3300 to 4100 (depending on facility location) and not all that easy to get
  10. i just read this i want some!!! got ndn feet too- shoe shopping always a nightmare good for nike!!!!!:balloons:
  11. Had one molester in a co. jail who came in with c/o "needs catheter to pee"-- exam, had an old dirty pic line up there along with much infection and filth
  12. I have only worked at county jail but it was the policy there that the inmate stick himself, dispose of the sharps into container and inject self. I for one feel safer that way because of the distance between me and them. I have experienced that the guards are (at times overly) protective of us and willing to use whatever force they feel appropriate
  13. I had my first fusion in 95(lumbar) second in 96 (cervical) and third a year ago. Apply for that SSDI-and if you get denied appeal. I went through 8 months of NO income when I was first injured (husb divorced me when I became a non-wage-earner and took the joint savings with him) Mine was an auto accident caused by ex. It took me years and I went through a lot of hell but I manage the pain and Social Security is paying for my LVN to BSN upgrade!
  14. I found that I liked working in the Shasta County Jail for PHS but I would not recommend it for everyone - especially for new nurses, you need to get your experience first! (Just my opinion, I'm no expert)
  15. In Northern California (Redding)I got $24 per hour as an LVN (PHS) - I think their pay is slightly higher than most, in a LTC facility in the same town I only got 17-but always it depends on area
