One book I like on this subject stresses the importance of nurses getting the word out to everyone that will listen. That includes patients, family, administrators, and CEO's. I'm surprised at how little the public actually knows about what nurses really do. Once, when a family member didn't think I knew anything about something, I tactfully informed her about what I did know and what my role in the Emergency Department really involved. She listened, and told me she was glad I spoke up. She truly didn't know.

Why do people stay in the hospital?

The only reason for someone to be admitted to a hospital is for nursing care.

I'm writing this today to give thanks to all the nurses in this world. I don't know if any of the nurses remember my post but in short I had a catheter force in me with the nurse not even telling me what he was going to do. I heard no kit open or any cleaning. My son was just told to leave That is all I'm going to say. It has been 2 years and it's over but I will never forget it and him. Over the last 2 years I have been in and out of the hospital for many reason from gallbladder surgery...A-fib...3 times in the hospital...Prostate surgery. Bladder spasm with a 24 flush...A heart Cath...And a Linq monitor put in my chest. I want to say thank you to all the nurses out there that have taking care of me and the ones that take care of all the people in this world. You have a hard job and you have to deal with a lot. I live in Orlando Florida have been taking care of in 3 of the Florida's hospitals I will be going back in December to have a ablation. God Bless you all Ken

For nurses to thrive, they need to think "outside the hospital" as long as the hospitals continue to devalue nurses.

Thank you Ken!

The issue is not the value of nursing. The issue is, that hospitals want to continue their control over the nursing profession.

What better way to control us, than to continue to deny our worth. As long as our professional practice is rolled into the room rate, housekeeping, and the complimentary roll of toilet paper, we will never have worth.

We are nothing but an item in the, "expense", column on the balance sheet.

And hospitals want it to stay like that.

As long as we have no worth, they can deny that we deserve higher pay, benefits, and better working conditions. The studies from the IOM, concerning safe nurse staffing, and better patient outcomes have been available for years.

Why are nurses not screaming this to the public, having rallies in a very public place, with the TV news, the papers, media, there to get the word out??

Deliberate short staffing is a major public health concern, and should be treated as such.

I was not going to say anything but that one post pissed be off. Why do you think it was not appropriate for me to comment on nurses. I have been taking care of by many nice nurses. My older brother was a nurse many years ago ( When you guys got paid way less then now ) and I have 3 nieces that are nurses. One of them is the head surgical nurse for the top heart doctor in Michigan. Also I worked in a nursing home for 5 years when I was younger. Also I was a ward secretary that helped the nurse. At that time we did not have computers and I had to pull all the patients chart on all 4 floors so the nurse could do her charts on all her patients by hand then put them back. All for $5.25 a hour. Also when they were short aids I took care of 9 patients to help out that was in front of my desk. I know how hard you guys work. We need more of the nurses that care about there patients and helping out there co workers. That is all I have to say Good bless you all Ken. PS Had a 9 hour heart ablation November 28. Burned the whole left side of my heart. 11 months no problem. Was in the hospital 9 times last year. The nurses were all great. Thank God for nurses
