Thinking of moving to UK

Hi! I'm obviously new here. My DH and I have been discussing a move to the south UK for some time. We currently live in Northern California. His parents are from Liverpool and Manchester. We have family all over Britain.

I'm just wondering how I go about getting licensed to work in the UK. I've done 5 1/2 years neonatal intensive care at a very well known hospital here.

Where do I start?

hope the move goes well for you as mentioned NMC international section is a good one to start and there are lots of hoops to jump through including an english exam. Be prepared at the moment as jobs are hard to find and hospitals are going through financial difficulties and laying staff off including medical staff

Also nursing is no longer considered an "A" class job by immigration so there are real problems there too.

However, that said there is an advert being carried in the Nursing Times at the moment for an overseas nursing programme at Bangor University with secure placements & accomodation. the telephone number is 08702 416087 (plus the country code ?+44) They also list a hotline - 07947 163628 (plus the country code) & an email address of [email protected]

this years programme starts on 27th November. However, I'm sure they would have info about next years too. So it depends if you like Wales or not I guess!

I'm thinking of moving to Northern California actually. I wouldn't ever go back to live in the UK if I had a choice in the matter.

I've lived in Wales too. Its nice. Lots of green rolling hills. And pubs. Very nice.

But do you know what nurses make over there? And the working conditions? And the weather?

In California we have good pay, good working conditions and good weather. Why give that up?

Not all nurses have bad working conditions or pay in the UK you know. I am making way more here in England than I will be making if I ever go the the US. I have a job lined up in San Fransisco and my pay there is over 20% LESS than I make here, plus the living costs in the Bay area are way in excess of the North of England. Yes, sure the weather can be pretty dismal here, but my husband is from Seattle and their weather is much the same as ours, in fact we have WAY less rain, trust me on that one. :uhoh3:

Interesting -tell me more. I have read quite a few posts from UK nurses that describe horrible working conditions. Where are the good jobs?

That has to do 100% with the contract that you signed. Average rate of pay in the Bay Area is about $100,000 per year, and I am sure that you were not getting that in the UK.

If you are getting more than that can I have your job when you go??

I'm going to be getting about 50% more than I get here & that's in Florida (traditionally lower pay than other places in the USA) with an agency!

However, I'm also going to be getting a great house - with no mortgage (thanks to London house prices) - more space, a better lifestyle for my kids (swimming pool, plenty to do outdoors etc) & yes warmer weather. Though it sure can rain in FL too!!

I am going to roughly double my wage from what I get here in the UK
